TCU Fans Apparently Still Consider SMU a Rivalry

Postby Stallion » Sun Sep 20, 2015 11:58 am

for all the bitchin' from a small segment of their mostly younger TCU fans I note a few points

not only was the game a sellout but just about every seat in the house was occupied. They've sold out their stadium for 3 years but there are usually empty seats where fans don't show up-not for SMU

3rd biggest crowd in stadium history

once again the TCU student section were all in their seats 10 minutes before the game. Heck there were a bunch already seated an hour before the game. They have great student support and SMU is nowhere close. And remember this is a poor SMU program that rarely has been considered competitive in 25 years

They really have it going to Ft. Worth although I don't think they have the defensive troops to pull it off this year
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

I think SMU will continue to build a fan base with students leading the way. Having the new dorms adjacent to Ford is a huge plus and with the brand of football Chad Morris is building, I think we will see more and more students coming to games and that will eventually translate to more alumni. We will struggle for years as we basically have a gap of 20-25 years of apathy towards athletics that came at a bad time. Let's face it, though...the reality for SMU is that it is going to be a tall order to ever get invited back to play with the big boys and like it or not, it is critical that SMU build a fan base that can compete with others at the P-5 level. Anyone notice the turnout for that Northwestern vs Duke game in Durham yesterday? Duke is fortunate to be playing with the big boys but their passion for hoops alone earns them a seat at the table.

I think it is just respect for what they have accomplished given the fact we started at the same point when our SWC mates abandoned us. No reason we could not have done the same, but for the school's leadership when things looked bleak.

Stallions h4ard on for TCU continues... They also have 40 to 40 yard line seats. Nice view, and larger undergrad student body of 9K.

Some of the things the TCU students were yelling at the SMU bench sure indicated the Frog faithful still view the SMU game as important. There was a group right by the SMU bench that talked a lot of trash when the Doctson scored to extend the margin to a two-score margin ... with 6:32 to go. Most of the fans I heard sounded glad to win, not like fans who were upset to win by such a small margin.

After Courtland Sutton made a long catch downfield early in the fourth quarter, one fan asked me "is 16 really a freshman? No (expletive) way."

That meshes well with the gaggle of 19-21 year old tcu coeds at Joe Ts who posed for a pic saying "smu sucks!" instead of cheese. One of their own grandpas mentioned that he was embarrassed and wouldn't be opposed to one of our group 'rassling' one of them.

A TCU buddy of mine messaged me late last night:

"Davis and Sutton are the real deal. Chad Morris is a fantastic coach. Nearly "*&ed myself when y'all got within a score late in the game. Wouldn't it be great if both teams were nationally ranked every September? This could become a big game with a lot of publicity for our area if SMU continues to improve. Please tell your fans that they need to turn out for this show. It is worth watching."

my friends at TCU are constantly complaining that their kids don't go or leave early. Trust me, if we had the run they have had we would have similar support. Lets start winning and then watch them roll in the door.

Zero chance at playoff this year with that defense. Less chance next year when the entire offense graduates. May just look back at that bowl win over Ole' Miss last year as their peak for the next few years.

Their tiny DB's couldn't even cover our guys, can't imagine what Baylor is going to do to them. Speed is great, but Gary better start recruiting some bigger guys. All 3 levels of their defense looks small.

I agree. Instead of crying and calling them names we should have copied them.

The TCU "fans" around me definitely viewed it as a rivalry and started talking trash as soon as I started cheering on our first drive....love it. I can't wait until we beat them next year.

Thanks Ken Pye!

The SWC broke up two years after Pye left SMU. Our leadership problem continued well after he left.
