It is tough for SMU to recruit JUCO's and transfers for two reasons. First were the old restrictions which have now been somewhat relaxed. The other reason is harder to deal with and hopefully once the Education Department is up and running it will help. That issue is transferable hours. To give you and example. A qb from Northwestern University (a school with academic credentials arguably better than ours) would have lost about half of his credit hours by transferring to SMU. He chose not to come. That's why Cavan and others have not succeeded in recruiting many JUCO players. Bennett has had some better luck, but still has a long way to go.

This debate is tired and frankly Stallion nobody questions you are a study of recruiting websites and know them quite well, but you don't know everything. To act like you do makes you rather unlikable, but that is neither here nor there. Clearly, SMU had a far too restrictive admissions policy and thankfully that has begun to open up a bit. We are all aware of the state of SMU football and any reasonable fan has to know we are still a few years away from being a consistently decent if not solid football team.

I can tell you that if you are not open to some other ideas you are doomed so let's expand a little bit. The bottom line (I think) is that we all want SMU to finally field a consistently competitive football team so let's keep that in mind.

yeah you are correct I don't give a damn about whether you like me or whether I can kiss up to my little Mustang Club buddies who have ignored the problems for 20 years. The ONLY thing I care about is to be make sure they someone speaks for SMU competing at the highest level possible in Division 1A. This is a KEY issue on determining whether SMU will be content to go 5-6 every year or whether we will become a top non-BCS program. You don't think it matters? Do you think it matters SMU had JUCOs on its team this year like Haywood, Chase and Romo. Whose side do you think Phil Bennett is on in this institutional debate? Who is not open new new ideas? Perhaps it is YOU!!!

frankly guys, i like stallion...he is very confident in his opinions and i agree with a lot of what he says....juco's are the way to go hands down.....there were restrictions in the past and present but a good recruiter can talk a player into comming ot smu if he can sell it.....but i say we move on.....looks like next year will be a good year and we all will just have to wait and see....stallion...stay confident man, i like your enthusiasm and arguments........but just remember dont always believe what you read....

but just one last comback for you.....it helps to have played and coached in 1-a football to know what the heck your talking about....and i was a blocking back...never ran the ball.....people like you that belive everything they read are the problem with our society.....instead of taking my advice since i was there at the time and know what really happen..you tend to belive what coaches tell the press....pretty idiotic if you ask me.....and thos two jucos that i named...they lost hours and dropped a class level to come to smu....most juco transfers can get into smu..its not that hard grade wise for athletes....they have to be willing to lose the hours..a good recruiter can convince them of that..so keep doing your internet research and arguing...ill stick to sources that were actually there.........but people like you will never change...believe what people tell you ...not what really happend...

Its tough to sell a recruit that he's going to have to spend another 3 years in college to graduate when he can go to another school like UTEP or UH and get out in 2. That's the tough part of the JUCO recruiting boat that Bennett has to deal with right now and as well as his predecessors. His predecessors had to recruit with even tighter standards. So, we are still behind the curve. I also agree that this big turn in the road will help us perhaps get some renewed interest in kids we are recruiting. Offensive Linemen know that DeMyron will be running up their butts for the next three years which is a good thing. D Linemen know that Sturdivant will be behind them for the next two years. QB's know that Chase and Kennedy will be outside waiting for their passes and Givens will be blowing by people next year with more experienced hands. These are positives that can be sold.

i agree..but that is why coaches get paid the big bucks.....not everyone can recruit.....its tricky you have to be a good sales men....but what got some of us was that in the south people consider smu an ivy league school..even thoug its not.....thats all i ever heard when i was being persuaded to give up all those hours "transfer...lose 15hrs but a degree from here is well worth the extra time spent in college..." these coachs are getting paid close to a million if not more when you add in all the extras....i think if your getting that much money you better do your job!!!!!! or at least be a persuasive coach...bottom line a coach has to find a way when there isnt a way....he has to think outside the box and get the recruites......even if he has hurdles infront of him....that seperates the great ones from the average joe...find a way..there is always a way

Hate to break the bad news but Sturdivant only has one more year. Sure wish they could have kept from using him his Freshman year. He was kind of wasted. At least we have one more with him. Hopefully he will be a repeat All-Conference player.

8)

It's good to hear that the coaches use the "Harvard of the South" line in the houses. If only that line would have worked on Matthew Stafford!!

enough of the back-n-forth on the restrictions, there are valid points on all of it.........one should not believe everything they are told either........

I'm open to plenty of new ideas such as replying to your post and if you read mine actually agreeing with your main points.

We all suffer from the frustration of actually following a team that has been one of the consistently bad teams for 16 years. Should SMU change their admissions policies? Of course. Who doesn't believe they should? BUT they do have to be publicly careful of how they do it considering history.
