Why/How is Matt Davis Here?

While drinking frog beer and eating their chicken and purple iced cookies, I was asked where we got our QB. I said he was a Johnny Football casualty at A&M who transferred to Tyler JC and wound up at SMU after 1 year.

I guess I hadn't really considered this before, but his skill set is lost on June Jones and in his offense. Was June going to convert him to WR after a season? I can't for the life of me figure out why June would recruit him to play QB.

Regardless, this is clearly fortuitous for CM. it also represents the kind of luck that good rebuilding programs seem to fall in to.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. In June's case, they are named Gilbert, Hunt, Sutton, and Davis.

There have been a LOT of really good players here over the last few years. People are all up in arms about June Jones that they want to pretend like he was terrible at everything.

The point is, what was June Jones going to do with Matt Davis? I watched the same SMU team as everybody else. I seriously doubt JJ was ever going to use Davis at QB.

it is very strange - not sure the connection. Maybe nobody was going to give him a look after JC. Like a better Justin Willis clone

He did not start at aTm nor did he start in JC. I believe Jones saw him as an athletic but was going to give him a chacne at QB first.

I always felt like Jones looked around, saw the positive effect of the spread, saw what GG's running ability did in the offense, and went out and recruited Davis and Colbert. He obviously had something in mind, but never followed through with it.

Conversely, Think of how many good players June had (lots of current and real NFL talent) and at our peak only had 7 wins

JJ brought him here because he didn't have to recruit him. No one else was willing to give him a chance, right? Redemption...savior. It's got JJ written all over it. Asymmetrixal bet that makes him look like a genius if it works and if it fails, everyone forgets about him
