Our team in 1780 scored no points that year. We are doomed to repeat it.

.... TCU, NTSU, BU is not Morehead, Albany, Lehigh. SMU would have blown through that schedule. Not saying SMU will overlook, just saying I don't think Dukes have talent to keep it close.

I captained that team. It was a rough year. Most of our good players were still in the great war of independence. I was 4-f.

Not basing it completely on looking at their past 4 years, but it is good to see how they have done historically vs FBS teams. My main worry is not that we won't win, but that I think this is a game where Defense needs to not let an FCS team score on them at will. Offense will blow them out but will defense step up. That is the issue here.

Looking back, you can see three factors in the decline: 1) Loss of assistant coaches who fired up the team in games and practice (McNight, JR, Klemm). The loss of those assistant coaches and budget to replace them was for the most part directly related to the ASU issue. 2) Change in the S&C program to Mel.
1. I think Frank Gansz was more of the heart of the team than those guys, although McKnight, Reinebold and Klemm were certainly never caught napping during practice to say the least. Steep decline in both attitude of team and performance of special teams after Gansz Sr. passed.
AND...
Point 1 & 2... Letting Vic go. Tragic. Vic was so bad <insert sarcasm hear> that he was quickly snapped up by lowly FSU -- who then proceeded to win 3 ACC championships, a BCS title, and made a trip to the Rose Bowl. Per Seminoles.com, "Widely considered one of the best and most innovative strength coaches in the country, Vic Viloria enters his sixth season as Florida State football’s head strength and conditioning coach."
I give June more credit than most, but firing Vic and not adapting his offense to his best player's (Willis) skill set in year one were Jones' biggest on-the-field blunders, IMHO.

This cannot stand without being fact-checked. I'll leave it to Stallion because it'll have to be adjusted totals for apples to apples comparison. Is this remotely accurate?
The best OL and receiving group we had was from Bennett. Once Bennett's players graduated the foundation was weakened. No facts to check on that just look at the what happened on the field. One thing you will never get that guy to say is that June and his staff recruited poorly which he did (probably because he has a relationship with some of the June's players and coaches). He will blame it on everything but poor recruiting. It seems like we went through 50 receivers to get a few decent ones that were not Bennett recruits. Hundley was the coach that got Davis and Reed whileMcKnight got fired for even worse recruiting. Bottom line is our foundation was on the Bennett players with a few good players sprinkled in that JJ's staff got.
And don't forget June's statement the year he tried to get the ASU job that there would be a "drop in talent after this year."
June new he had recruited poorly (that's why he admitted the talent drop) and the most of Bennett's foundational players were graduating and he tried to jump ship on a high note.
PB's OL and WR's were pretty good.

Is that the year you came in fourth in the Heismen?

that was a close vote as I recall. The older Mrydel gets, the better he was

Go fact check me on Rivals . For Bennett's last three years or 3 of 4 we are in the 100s in recruiting rankings, while under June we were above 100 every year, sometimes well above 100. Of course for both of them you probably have to go beyond that and try and figure out who actually got into school and played .
Nobody is arguing that June put a lot of effort into recruiting. But he did pull in better recruits than Bennett did for the average player. Even after the Bennett recruits were out of here, June's W-L record was still better, and against better competition in a better conference. Again, not saying it was anywhere near where we wanted it to be.
No wait a second as long as Jason is making stupid comparisons to previous coaching staffs who weren't allowed to admit the same players as June Jones-then this argument is not over. I got the numbers from the Dallas Morning News that June Jones from Day 1 not Year 3 or 4-got triple the number of academically marginal players into SMU than previous coaching staffs. All previous coaching staffs could have been competitive in a non-BCS/G5 conference using the Recruiting Model June Jones was handed. I don't think what June jones did was at all remarkable-well maybe Year 2 was a good job. All programs in Texas and in SMU's conference had years-usually multiple years- where they achieved far greater results with 9, 10 and 11 game winning seasons during June's tenure

There was only a couple of years or so when Bennett's recruits were out of here and he only won 5 games that year then only 1 the next. That is why June said that it would be a big drop in talent. And June's best teams were with Bennett recruits. Bennett's recruit's were his foundation. June was a better coach than Bennett but after Bennett's O line and receivers graduated then team started going downhill. Also, do you mean June did not recruit like we wanted or like he should have? Especially since he had less restrictions than any head coach since the DP?
