1935 champs

Post by Sewanee Stang »

At Amon Carter Stadium, TCU lists conference championship teams by year on the concrete ribbon on the East side of the stadium. They claim a conference championship in 1935. This appears to be an error as SMU defeated TCU in "the game of the century" and finished the regular season undefeated and conference champions. What can be done to correct the error, or am I misunderstanding something?

True, but SMU won the conference championship. The sign appears to list 1935 as a conference championship for TCU.

If they claim a conference championship in 1935, then they're lying.

Oh yeah that would be wrong. I thought they were one of about 5 teams claiming a national Championship in 1935

This was before the AP poll. I think there were a number of polls with no official poll and TCU may have gotten 1st in one of those.

SMU got first in the Dickinson Poll which was the most recognized at the time. This is my recollection from what I read in the past on it.

TCU does have some gall putting that up when we beat them straight up. They must figure no one will remember.

If some ratings service gave a team a national championship, that team generally claims it. That's why Alabama claims so many. Ironically, Texas does not claim as many as it could.

TCU claims the 1935 based on selections by Ray Bryne and the Williamson System. I am still trying to find out who Ray Byrne was (no relation, by the way).

That's pretty crazy for them to claim a conference championship in 1935 though.

Those polls also came out before the bowl games, as they should.

Also, if you haven't been to the new Smu football office go take a gander. The trophy case will give any true SMU fan and homer chills. The three nat'l championships are listed with a space reserved and labeled 'SMU's fourth national championship.' Why the hell not, right?

I'm sure Chad wouldn't mind you walking up there. The Doak wall is also impressive.

Pretty universally acknowledged that title claims from 1936 until the BCS were based on the AP, so 1981 and 1982 claims based on NCF and Helms aren't well founded.

TCU's 1935 claim, on the other hand, is well founded. No AP then. Dickenson final rankings and almost all other popular ratings of the time were issued at the end of the regular season without accounting for bowl results. The only rating issued after the bowls and incorporating bowl results was Williamson. In 1935 Williamson named TCU and Minnesota as co-champs.
