Pretty universally acknowledged that title claims from 1936 until the BCS were based on the AP, so 1981 and 1982 claims based on NCF and Helms aren't well founded.
TCU's 1935 claim, on the other hand, is well founded. No AP then. Dickenson final rankings and almost all other popular ratings of the time were issued at the end of the regular season without accounting for bowl results. The only rating issued after the bowls and incorporating bowl results was Williamson. In 1935 Williamson named TCU and Minnesota as co-champs.
Well, I guess we can factually say that we beat the 1935 National Champs, and the Frogs lost to the 1935 National Champs.

Weren't bowl games considered "pre-season" back then? So winning or losing such-and-such bowl game would be irrelevant to the 1935 final rankings, but would be considered in the 1936 season's rankings. "Well founded"...hurumph and good day!
