What happened to Wood and Briggs?

Post by JasonB »

We played the entire game without our best OL and our best DT. What happened?

Really poor assignment defense. They would run a zone read and everyone would commit to either the QB or the RB, and if we guessed wrong it was a huge hole.

Our LBs are really playing poorly. Horton, Yenga, and Shaq don't itch for contact, they aren't making any plays. Safeties aren't much better. I saw Tui actually take on a blocker, but besides that they aren't making any plays and aren't physical enough. Every run was either 1 yard or 20. Horton gets caught on the wrong side of the line.

The Star position needs to dominate. I think it is time to push Shaq back to safety, where we could use the help in coverage, and make a change there. 11 is aggressive and gets involved, but he is too small to last. Yenga was more involved today, but he is struggling as well. I think it is time to see if some of the frosh LBs can make some plays... tonight was just awful. It isn't possible for them to perform worse than the team did tonight. It is unacceptable to have players run up the middle and after they get past the line there is no contact for 30 yards. They aren't getting blockers to the next level. There just isn't anyone there to make a play, they are out of position.

Why aren't we just throwing it up to Sutton? For some reason, we lined Sutton up on the right a lot. Davis would just stare left. I don't know if he was just worried about his tackle, but Sutton had no safety help! Just throw the ball up to him and let things happen! We are making things too hard.

OL gave up too many sacks and was pushed around a good bit. Glad Davis is a mobile QB. D Line got gashed as well. We just have mostly FCS talent minus a few players. Even though you won't admit it. This was more that just Briggs and Wood not playing. The sack did not come from Briggs replacement. In fact, he did pretty good in his first start imo. This is not a strength and conditioning problem it is a talent and depth problem. You have to recruit or get left behind.

100% on board with you on the LBs. Why not get the younger kids in there and at least get them some experience?

More evidence we were out coached tonight.

Really disappointed in this performance. I know we've got a long way to go but this felt every bit as bad as last year even with more offensive production.

Do we know severity of injuries. Didn't hear anything about Briggs. Did he suit up?

Briggs did play. Chad Morris said after the game that Pursley got the start because Briggs "was out" some during the week and Pursley had a great week of practice, so they gave him the start. But Briggs did get in the game some. Pretty sure Wood did not play.

The sacks were not on the O line for once. The coverage left Davis in the pocket too long and Davis hasn't matured enough to know when to just throw it away. He will learn that. The O line wasn't as effective in the run game as hoped and that's where we struggled and itchiest us on O.

JMU's O line took over the game. That is a great QB but he had huge holes all night long.

Why are college injury reports so scarce? "We can't talk about that". Well if we're donating hundreds to thousands of dollars each year, can't we at least get an NFL style injury report?

Thought Pursley had a decent game. And I thought Green had a good game replacing Wood. Green really was disruptive in the 1st half imo.

That's only partially correct. If a team wanted to disclose injury information, they'd just have their players sign a release before the season and do so. But since no coach believes they get an advantage from releasing such information, they instead hide behind the law.

Woods had a minor injury, should be back for ECU. Starting cb Horace Richardson didn't play as well.

i didn't realize Wood was out. That hurt from leadership as much as depth. As for Briggs, he must have been far less than 100%. While i believe pursley probably did have a good week and will develop into a good player, Briggs has been playing too well for it to have been a good week of practice by a freshman to cause your left tackle to be rotated out. We also appeared to have a few concerning injuries during the game. Rodney Clemons came out, and i think i saw Kevin Johnson in a walking boot and crutches. That's good young speed that we need. By the way, i was 100 yards away and could see the massive pulling on Courtlands jersey on the last play. Would have put us in field goal range. Hedlund his doing great btw, he might have made it from 60 yards. Tough night for the team. All they can do is keep working and fighting.
