Thoughts on the game

Postby CalallenStang » Sun Sep 27, 2015 8:38 am

I've had some time to think about what we saw last night.

1) JMU was bigger, faster, and stronger than us. Thanks June

2) JMU's QB was Vad Lee and yet we never left anyone as a QB Spy to stop his running. Thanks Van

3) We were dominated at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Thanks S&C coaches

4) Multiple blown coverages including the final TD. Thanks DBs and DB coach

5) At least the fireworks were pretty good. Should have started them right after the game, though. If you're going to give away a car, just announce the winner.

Agree but #3 is another thanks June. The new S & C coach did a hell of a job on kids that weren't D-1 quality.

I've been to all 4 games-WRs have been running past our CBs all season long. They simply don't have the speed to play CB. its not going to change all season. we have 1 average DB-that's it. Total rebuild job which is why we are signing 7-8 DBs in this next class.

The only thing I can think of is to get Kevin Johnson a shot-I guess it was Clemmons that came off with an ankle injury. You can look up and down our roster-the answer ain't there.

In regard to # 2, I think we may have had a spy on Lee., at least late. Just a non effective spy.

Johnson was helped off the field after a punt return. I am told it's an Achilles and they'll find out the severity today

To number 3 above, I think the staff thought we were going to come out and be able to impose our will on their defense and that wasn't the case. We stuck with our run game too long and didn't open up the offense until the second half, which allowed JMU to have all the momentum early on.

To number 5 above, awful drawing that car out before the fireworks...although I couldn't enjoy them anyway after the loss.

As a point 6 our linebacker and secondary play is awful...we have to look at ways schematically to cover up some of these weaknesses, maybe the 4-2-5 is not the best way to do this. It seems this defense has always worked well for TCU because of their speed on the backend.

I think we are farther away at linebacker than DB even. There just does not appear to be much athleticism in that position. We need to go find some mean streaks out there.

Total Offense

SMU last year 127th out of 128 teams
SMU this year 31st out of 127 teams

Total Defense

SMU last year 121st out of 128 teams
SMU this year 127th out of 127 teams

Remember, we are entering the relatively easier part of our schedule so both our offensive and defensive rankings should improve.

What really stands out is how inept we were last year. It has to be one of the lowest in college football history.

Radio broadcast said they both got hurt last night.
