The D is a lot worse than I thought. I gave too much credit to Baylor and TCU's offenses, but its official now our back 7 is awful. Our seconday and linebacker play is non-existant. Gonna have to score allotta points to get W's this season.

Again...

We have had two games against "lesser" opponents and have come out completely flat both times. UNT wasn't good enough to take advantage of it. JMU was. I love what CM has done so far, but that is on the coaching staff. We did not compete physically the way we did against Baylor or TCU or the defense did against UNT.

Malone in way over his head. Dude doesn't have a clue. Obvious to anyone who watched that game. Demoted/replaced at seasons end if Morris wants to stay on track with rebuild. Sometimes you just have to admit your mistakes, cut your losses, and move on.

We only recruited 1d lineman and 1 cornerback in last year's class. Can we give Coach Malone at least one defensive class.

No, he absolutely has to go since he couldn't fix the worst defense in FBS in just four games.

I can really vouch for most of the names on the list as I will admit I'm ignorant as to who they are (though I can infer from the last names) but I will say Prescott at least has a place on the field. Yenga looks like a middle school LB with an impressive build. It's one thing to not be a quality player but it's a whole different thing to be that unskilled at the position

Shaq Randolph is another one. "Looks" the part for sure and the coaches kind of fell in love with the potential. But he reminds me a lot of guys I played with in HS. Very athletic looking, great on the practice field but once the bright lights came on they always disappeared.

As bad as the secondary is... they should have played a cover 1 defense and brought the strong safety in the box. This would have at least given us one extra defender in the box to miss a tackle. Their QB was an absolutely terrible passer and we should have done anything possible to force the passing game. It was like the baylor game when we thought we were good enough to play man against their wr's. We should be exposing their weaknesses, not allowing their strengths. That's being out coached... and JMU's coach OC made a lot of questionable calls.

Malone is a perfect match for this defense, both terrible.

I get that Malone doesn't have his guys yet, but the mark of a good coach is doing more with less and he just hasn't shown that yet. I don't care how bad the talent is giving up 700 yards and not showing any real improvement is a cause for concern. They are running a very aggressive defense(which I like) but that requires high caliber athletes which we don't have.

They need to play more to their strengths and try to put the players in a position where their weaknesses are not exposed such as going man to man against Baylor's and TCU's wide receivers. I like the 4-2-5 defense and want a fast and aggressive style not a bend but don't break defense. I'll wait and see how we do in our conference play but right now its looking like Malone is in over his head.

This weaker defense problem that has everyone's attention and creating thoughts of bad coaching, etc. is a bit of a surprise to me. If you guys will recall at the start of the year comments were being made on this board suggesting upperclassmen WRs that were not going to get to play much (because of freshmen WR's) should be moved to DB's. Many posts warned the board to not get too excited about the coming year. Everyone should have known defense would be a problem this year. I hope we win some games and have some good parties. Time will tell how many we can win. But don't get down on the coaches or the program or the school. Let these coaches have the latitude they will need to bring a respectable program to our university. And, let Morris decide who is going to be on his coaching staff. Im sure he knows what we need.

1) Our D last year was worse than the numbers show because as bad as the offense was, we ran clock and really wasted a lot of time to shorten the game.

2) We played 0 coverage in the Baylor game with no safety help and got killed. In this game, the safeties stayed wide and not in the box I think because both of our starting corners were out. Pick your poison to a certain extent, but I think if we had played zone and not man it would have helped us not get so spread out. The Tom Mason 3-4 zone got picked apart every game with that gap between the safety and the LB all the time, but I think if we would have run a zone last night we would have played better against the run and I don't think the JMU QB had the accuracy to pick apart a zone.
