Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredAnd it doesn't matter if he thinks they will do the same to UNC or not. He is pointing out that the NCAA will be compared regarding UNC, therefore if they want some wiggle room with their blue look the best ease up on us regarding post season.
If we are one season, UNC is at least two yrs. less would scream out the selective inforcement issue, and we actually would have a legal case. They need to back down on us so they have more room to work with the tar heels. RGT is putting them in a corner.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredIt's not that surprising even if he wasn't all in on athletics. One way or another this is his watershed moment. He could wind up looking like Donald Shields while ironically having been on the Knight Commission. Or he could rally the University and fight to overcome in a way that he's heard over and over again Pye refused to.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredWell, the talking heads are already out there pushing that this was solely athletic department while UNC was solely academic fraud so they should be viewed differently...ignoring the fact that coaches and tutors shepherded athletes into those classes. It is terrifyingly funny to see the wagons circle around the big schools. Well, sad too.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredThey can circle all they want. Everyone know that is [deleted]. The UNC academic community didn't just all collectively at once decide to commit fraud over ten yrs without orchestration from above.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scared
Agree this is a watershed moment. I always thought the NCAA would love to crack down on SMU but NCarolina was our saving grace. NCarolina's infractions, over several years, is 1,000x+ worse than what we did. SMU = 1 player N Carolina = over 1,200 players over 2 decades If our penalties are remotely similar, is there any litigation possibilities based on selective enforcement? I would love to read the disclosure documents if we litigate...ours and NCarolina's. Last edited by SoCal_Pony on Tue Sep 29, 2015 10:46 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredLove the stance Turner is taking.
Should be pointed out that the man who employs many of these talking heads is a grad of... UNC... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Skipper "[College] referees couldn't manage a White Castle." -Mark Cuban
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scared
Well put. The bluest of blue bloods are never punished fairly while small private schools are disproportionately punished punished par for the course. Same ole story. All one has to do is look at Pedophilia State and the upcoming slap on the wrist for UNC. Expecting any sort of justice from the NCAA and its giant state school alum employees (ala all the UT alums that were involved in the enforcement committee ala 1987) is wishful thinking taken to the extreme. Easy to stick it to the little guy if history is any indication.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredJust posted in a new thread, but I wonder if the NCAA is trying to freak out all of the other schools that are next on the list so that they can clean up the AAU program and all of the street agent crap that goes on.
I would not be surprised to see this result in massive upheaval in the AAU program and then to see all of the colleges win their appeals and have sanctions significantly reduced.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredI am proud of President Turner.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scared
I think you're giving the NCAA too much credit BOP - Providing insensitivity training for a politically correct world since 1989.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredNo question that UNC should get them to the woodshed for decades of cheating but does anyone really think they will be? The NCAA is a sham organization who only does what is in it's own best interest $$$$ .
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredThat is correct until proven otherwise.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scaredAs I posted in another thread. If UNC is punished proportionately, their entire athletic program would be ineligible for post season for 50 years and each sport would lose 3 scholarships for 150 years.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scared
They're engaging in some incredibly fallacious reasoning to make UNC's situation not sound worse. What I've seen is some really tenuous arguments that UNC wasn't providing an "extra benefit" since their fake classes were also available to regular students. The problem with that argument is that the violation isn't "extra benefits" - it's academic fraud. Academic fraud doesn't fall under the category of extra benefits in the NCAA rules. It falls under the rules about unethical conduct. In other words, it really doesn't matter that UNC's fake classes were available to regular students as well - it's still unethical to create do-nothing classes and hand out grades for work that wasn't done... and UNC did that to the tune of 3,100 total cases where over 1,000 of the cases involved student-athletes, according to one article I've read on their situation.
Re: USA today: RGT calls out (implies) UNC should be scared....and when 47% of the students in a field of study are athletes (and its not Physical Education) then that raises a reasonable inference that this was really an Major created to specifically benefit the athletic department. I guarantee you it raises huge red flags to educational accreditation reviewers. Of course, other students were in that major all course have to be available to all students but that is an unusually high concentration of athletes
