Recruiting this year... main targets

Postby JasonB » Tue Nov 29, 2005 2:29 pm

Obviously, QB is a major target, so I will get that out of the way. We have three on the roster, and already have a commitment from one. The JUCO that we are reported offering by Rivals, Marcus Johnson, I would suggest that at 6'1, 175, Johnson is being looked at as a receiver. We will obviously take one JUCO QB, and then we will take a third QB, JUCO or not, only if he is really, really highly regarded.

At RB, we are loaded with youth. Ivory is the only runner we have offered, but he probably projects at LB. We will probably only take one if a really good one comes along.

At WR, we have a ton of upperclassmen, and two really good young guys. We need to recruit at least one WR, but that JUCO QB Johnson might be it. Burley is the other guy that we will take if he comes in. Other than that, we will recruit some athletes who will fit at either WR or DB. No JUCOs unless that QB comes in.

TE is not a need. We will only take one if a good one comes along.

OL. We actually have a ton of OL on the roster on scholarship. We graduate quite a few next year, but that is why we took a good amount last year. Right now, I show 15 on the roster, and 3 deep at 5 positions = 15. We have a lot of experienced players here, so I don't see any JUCOs coming in. We already have 1 commit, I think 2 is the most that we would take.

DL. We have a lot of tackles, not so many DE. We lose Stansbury this year and rogers next. So, DE is probably the priority. Our line is set up pretty well next year, so no JUCO necessary. Probably two recruits, and I would not be surprised to see both as a DE

LB is obviously a big need position. Only two returning with any experience. We need an instant starter at OLB and a lot of depth. We should have 9 on the roster, right now going into next year I show us at 5 scholarship players. I believe that we will take 4 recruits, 2 JUCO (one OLB, one MLB), 2 HS.

In the secondary, we actually have a lot of speed and players, but a huge lack of experience. Right now, we only have 12 scholarship players in the secondary. The roster needs to be set up for 3 deep at 5 positions (nickel package), which means 15 scholarships. I would not be surprised to see us take 2 JUCOs and one HS player.

We need a kicker and a punter badly.

SO, here is the breakdown:

JUCO: 1 QB, 1 Athlete, 2 LB, 2 DB = 6

HS: 1 QB, 2 OL, 2 DL, 2 LB, 1 DB, 1 WR, 1 K, 1 P = 11

That gives us 17 players. Isn't that the number someone put out earlier? I know it is odd not having a RB recruit, but I just don't think it is necessary, we have other positions to fill. I also put a K and a P, because Wolcott is no good and I don't know anything about the others we have in the fold. But if we don't need those two spots, they would go to Athletes. Who we get from JUCOs at LB, QB, and DB will say a lot about how far this team goes next year.

Does Fitzgerald project as a DB, or will we continue to try to give him the ball on offense.

I bet he will go both ways.
That is.... as long as he holds onto the BALL.

Sure did make some good runs at the UTEP game.

I think we will see him in the mix at running back and playing a lot of special teams. He hasn't seen the field since he switched to the secondary and line backer.

So, now we have the HS QB, and 2 OL out of the way. It suprises me a little that we took a JUCO OL, but I can see the need at center for some immediate help. I don't believe we will take another high school player on the OL, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a JUCO brought in at OG to compete immediately with Peveto/Urbanus, both of whom were inconsistant this year.
