Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts"Our endowment at uh is larger than LSU's!!!"
.....and half as big as SMU's endowment while supporting 5-6 times more students. Land acquisition costs though are low in the vicinity I'll admit "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
Seems like with all that endowment money they would be able to offer a more attractive base salary that 700,000$less than what morris makes. That's p5 coordinator money. Get real uh or lose your coach. If morris leaves smu, money WILL NOT be the reason.
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
Why overpay the market when you don't have to? If you pay a Walmart cashier CEO money, is that money going make them qualified to be CEO? SMU had to overpay the market because they've been a coaching career killer post Hayden Fry 40+ years ago.
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
No, but when you offer higher wages you naturally have your pick of the best applicants that actually are qualified. E.g morris and herman.
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
Pretty good post. However the had to part prob applied more to June than Chad. We paid what we did because he was the hottest asst in the country and already making 1.3

Re: Houston Experience and Other ThoughtsUS News & World Report Rankings
American Athletic Conference 1. U.S. Naval Academy (not ranked but let's be honest) 2. Tulane (41) Endowment $1.184B for 8,400 undergrads 3. UConn (57) Endowment $437M for 18,400 undergrads 4. SMU (61) Endowment $1.56B for 6,300 undergrads 5.. Tulsa (86) Endowment $885M for 3,200 undergrads 6. Temple (115) Endowment $517M for 28,400 undergrads 7. Cincinnati (140) Endowment $1.2B for 23,700 undergrads 8.. South Florida (156) Endowment $418M for 35,800 undergrads 9. Central Florida (168) Endowment $135.5M for 60,800 undergrads 10. Houston (187) Endowment $716M for 33,100 undergrads 11. East Carolina (194) Endowment $145M for 22,200 undergrads 12. Memphis (UR) Endowment $218M for 17,200 undergrads Houston might be one of the most underwhelming schools in the country given their location and proximity to large coporations and enormous student population. But hey at least they're ahead of East Carolina and Memphis! Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: Houston Experience and Other ThoughtsI have lived in both Houston and Dallas. I used to visit the cougar high business school for an investors club. There is no comparison between the two schools, SMU is light years ahead in facilities, in location and alums that support and promote the university.
If one is really interested in facilities and a top level education in Houston they will attend Rice and not even give cougar high a thought.
Re: Houston Experience and Other ThoughtsThis thread is hilarious. If SMU is so "rich" why haven't they "bought" a good coach before this year? Didn't you pay 500k to Phil Bennett, why couldn't you afford to pay for someone better then, or even before then? How come your annual athletic fund is only 3.3M when UH's is 4.5M, it seems like you should be able to raise more money from "rich" alums? Also, why does the average SMU booster donate about $100 less than the average UH booster ($1,451 vs $1,345)? Why did you have to fill out the staff with graduate assistants because the head coach took most of the salary pool? If Chad Morris isn't leaving Texas to be a P5 head coach, why did he leave Texas to be an OC in Clemson, South Carolina? He seemed to do okay there, was he traumatized by his success out of state? Also, I love the academic smack. I'll admit SMU is a good school, but it's not Rice, where I went to grad school (which was top 5 in the country in my field), and I even got in with my lowly degree from UH.
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
Are you suggesting that June Jones wasn't a good coach!? Heresy! Haha
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
The way you spin half facts to meet your bias is cute.
Re: Houston Experience and Other Thoughts
Not sure if it's hilarious, more like pathetic. Richer/poorer....smarter/dumber...yada yada yada Both coaches gone within next 4 years and UH near the front of P5 invite line. Morris has the tougher job, but should be able to keep the fight for AAC supremacy between the Texas schools. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Re: Houston Experience and Other ThoughtsImportant figures are bolded for the UH clown throwing out wrong numbers. Nice try
![]() July 22, 2015 DALLAS (SMU) – Donors to SMU Athletics have once again set a new record for generosity, contributing more than $13.3 million, a 24% increase, in support of Athletic Department operations and SMU’s 424 student-athletes during the last fiscal year. Included in that total are nearly $5.3 million in Mustang Club gifts, which provides critical unrestricted support. That total represents an increase of 60% over the previous year's record $3.3 million result. Total donors also increased 32% from 2,997 to 3,956. “I continue to be inspired by the generous support of SMU alumni and friends," said SMU A.D. Rick Hart. "We are grateful to the 4,000 donors whose investments enable us to prepare students for life and compete for championships. Each of our student-athletes benefits from training with great coaches, exceptional medical care, outstanding academic support, the opportunity to travel and compete in sports they love and so much more. I want to thank all of our donors, the many volunteers and SMU development staff for another record year." Since Hart’s arrival on the Hilltop in 2012, Mustang Club annual giving has more than doubled, from $2.6 million to $5.3 million, and donor support of operations has jumped from $8.4 million to more than $13 million. In addition to these gifts, significant investments from donors have been made in SMU Athletics’ facilities, including Moody Coliseum, the Miller Event Center and the new SMU Tennis Complex. Fundraising continues for these facilities, in addition to the planned SMU Aquatics Center on East Campus and Trinity Forest Golf Club. Re: Houston Experience and Other ThoughtsWhen SMU builds something on the 2nd most beautiful campus in America its actually built by SMU alumni and friends
When UH builds something its on the back of student athletic fees and the guber'mint teet "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: Houston Experience and Other ThoughtsDallas has the State Fair of Texas. Winning! There is no rebuttal one could make, on any level, that can trump that. Just won that battle...next?
