JohnnyRock wrote:I hate to state the obvious but how is SMU supposed to build winning seasons when our AD continues to schedule multiple Power 5 teams for non-conference games each year. The AD should create a schedule to realistically allow the coaches to get to 3-1 or 4-0 so the team does not have to go nearly undeafeated in conference play to make a bowl game. Why schedule Baylor, Texas Tech, etc. when they do not want us in their conference? Why do them any favors and be their whipping boys? Why are we playing Michigan? Money? We don't recruit in Michigan so the game is nothing more than an easy victory for them. I don't see much success going forward until the AD puts a non-conference schedule together to get the team to 3-1 or 4-0 going into conference play. Tired of the same old losing seasons with no hope for success. I am not the only one because the alumni, students, and the local community are not supporting the team with a losing record.

This was supposed to be our year to win the national championship when we go undefeated and play Baylor and TCU.
But seriously, the OOC schedule is made 5-10 years in advance. What happens in 5-10 years if God forbid we are actually good and go undefeated but are left out of the dance because we scheduled cupcakes???

If HCCM is still here in 2018 and has four recruiting classes on campus then I think we can give Michigan a good game at the Big House. Hell, look what we did at TCU this year.

Another sibling that can't win in the SMU-TCU competition. Does she ride the bench too?

Or not - up to you.
I regret my decisions. He's ready to throw shade at an entire university and alumni base so we should just allow him to do so. I see the error of my ways now.

I'm glad we are talking about this again.
We never lose games we don't play.

JMU is undefeated and ranked 4th in FCS. They have their three toughest games ahead of them Richmond #11, William & Mary, #17, and Villanova #19. Nova, JMU, W&M, and Richmond are all in the mix for the CAA every year and many times they end up knocking each other off. Those are four very good FCS programs all in the same conference. The CAA may very well be the best FCS conference as far as strength at the top is concerned. When ODU moved up to CUSA (despite never winning an FCS title), the CAA had to back fill.

One more stat on this topic, since I am the only person that looks at this beyond anecdotal [deleted].
We are in the middle of season 19 post-SWC. How many of those seasons was SMU .500 or better in conference?
Any guesses?
11 of those 18 years, SMU had a .500 or better record in conference.
Definitely, though, lets keep scheduling dramatically over our heads and maybe it will work out one of these years.

Who would you schedule then? Should we stop playing our rival TCU since they are so good now? Schedule: FCS, Sun Belt, Sun Belt, C-USA? I feel like our schedule going forward is much more manageable. TCU, Baylor, Texas State, Arkansas State, UNT (although a lot of people don't want them), etc. As long as we don't schedule Texas A&M, Baylor, and TCU in the same year anymore we should be fine.

I don't want to drop TCU, but as long as they are a top 10 team, I don't feel the need to schedule Baylor/A&M/Tech/OSU/Michigan as well. It is generally that slot that beats me down every year. A bruiser Nonconference schedule has rarely worked out for anybody, but people on this board keep thinking it will benefit SMU.

My only argument with you blog is that we schedule 4 or 5 years in advance. Should we not hope for some improvement in 5 years? If we had progressed under Jones in a manner that it looks like we can under Morris, we should have been competitive in all our games this year. This years schedule was built to put us in a P5 bowl game. This years team was built for Division 2 football. I think the scheduling was fine, the coaching was not up to speed. If we could schedule one year out we could work out way up, but we have wandered in the wilderness so long we are in a bind on scheduling. We are the cupcake until Morris can turn it around.

Why not schedule low P5s and hope they don't Baylor it?
