I got a three month sabbatical grant from the Lilly Foundation and will spending the time hiking and biking through Ireland. I will be spending a month in Galway (I would move there if I could) and the rest of the time wandering. The grant also pays for my family to come for two weeks. I was supposed to go earlier this year but that darn heart attack and bypass surgery kind of put that on hold until next year.

Well I'm glad to hear you get to go. My dad is from south Galway and Galway city is one of the best places on earth. It's actually the part of the country where the "Abu" comes from!

It blows my mind to consider if you take the DFW metroplex and drop it on Dublin it pretty .much reaches across the whole island. Amazing to consider how much a tiny place like Ireland has affected the U.S..

(And also how grossly and wastefully people have sprawled across this prairie in Texas)

If it weren't for diseased potatoes and horrible weather the world would be a very different place.

I've always been curious about the popularity of the Cranberries in Ireland. Given that Zombie seems to be anti-IRA, and the IRA was using terrorists tactics to dislodge the British just like the during the main independence movement, and the British really did treat Ireland brutally as a colony for centuries up in to the 20th century, shouldn't Ireland be/been very pro-IRA and thus anti-cranberries? The Irish have a much stronger justification to use violence against the UK than we ever did.

I think the violence had just become too much. But yes, the Irish might have been more opressed by the British than any other 'colony.'

I think it's strange that Rory McIlroy will be competing for Ireland in the Olympics next year being that he is from Belfast (his grandmother is Republic of Ireland and the ioc has those weird ancestry rules).

Man, no sheet. A little older genre and they'd use it as something to prop Rhyner up with for a segment or two

The IRA did not represent the vast majority of Irish people when it came to the British. They were basically organized crime and had a tiny but fanatical support structure.

And now they are politicians.
