Fellas, who was the last 5-star recruit for the Mustangs? My brother and I just got into an argument about it.

I remember the signing, I thought he was a three or four star player.
Anybody know?

He was not a 5 star player. 3 or 4.

The closest thing we have gotten recently to a 5 star is V Chase, who based on rankings and offers probably should have been a 4 or 5 star.

Mosley was High School class of 97...redshirted at SMU in 98.

I have it that he was a 4 star recruit...anyone else know for sure?

I'm not sure if Rivals even used that system back then but I do know that he was somewhere in the range of a Texas Top 15-20. In 2006 Rivals right now has only about 37 national 5 star players. But to answer your question who was the Last 5 star recruit-which would probably be a National Top 35 or so I'd say it probably was LM David Richards in 1985 who was probably the number one rated Offensive Lineman in the country.

I almost addressed this post directly to you. My brother thought Cavan got one, and I said it was pre-Death Penalty.

A. It was when Steve Malin recruited at SMU. I do think it was Marcus Mosley.

Mosley popped up a few years later at some Arkansas School - anyone know whatever happend to him - or whatever happened to Steve Malin (post SAT incidents).

You are kind of right. Mosley was certainly Cavan's best recruit, he was a consensus top 50 state player. However, I am using the Rivals/scouting technique, whereby only thirty or forty players in the country are rated with 5 stars. For instance, this season, the QB from Stephenville is great and signed with UT, but he is only four stars.

Marcus was ranked from 10-15 in the state of Texas and was a national top 100 player. Not sure how that translates to Rivals stars.

M mosley was a joke!!!!! ask anyone who played with him at SMU. i know i played with him....the kid was horrible....he got kicked out of SMU...there are two stories..the cover up story was he couldnt cut it grade wise...the truth was he knocked up a 14yr old girl and the father was pressing charges...SMU didnt want that image so the kicked him out.....thats the jist of it...details could be fuzzy but i know that was it..i remember after practice one day we all were walking back to the locker room and mosley was mouthing off how he was going to play at SMU for two years then go pro........Lloyd banks (running back)turned around and humiliated him so bad he almost cried....this is one reason i cant stand rankings...kid was 100 in the nation and was the worst line backer i have ever played against...for those of you who know p-train was 100x better then him.... love ya p-train...know that kid may of not had the skill but he sure as heck had the heart and love of the game

Well since Rivals didn't give stars back in 1997 here is the best I can do...

For the past three years only the top three texas athletes have been 5 stars. So likelyhood that a 10-15 ranked player would be a 5 star is very slim. Not to mention that only ranking I can find has him mentioned as third team all-state which again is not 5 star material.

Here's an excerpt from the Sporting News write up in 1998: "....SMU signed four consensus Top 100 Texas high school players, with the best being linebacker Marcus Mosley. He is the most highly decorated Mustangs signee since pre-death penalty days...."
