June Jones, the winning-est coach in University of Hawaii football history, wants the job again.

Jones told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in a brief phone interview today that he will apply for the opening created when Norm Chow was fired Sunday.

"I don't want to comment further at this time because the attention should stay on the team now, and hopefully (interim coach) Chris (Naeole) can lead them to some wins down the stretch," Jones said.

The Rainbow Warriors are 2-7 and play at UNLV on Saturday. Even if they win the remaining four games they are assured a fifth-consecutive losing season.

Jones, 62, a former UH and NFL quarterback, was head coach nine seasons at Manoa, seven of them ending with winning records.

Upon his arrival in 1999, Jones led Hawaii to a 9-4 record including a win in the Oahu Bowl. UH had gone 0-12 the previous season.

His teams compiled a 76-41 mark, including a 12-0 regular season in 2007. The Jan. 1, 2008, Sugar Bowl, which Hawaii lost 41-10 to Georgia, was Jones' last game as Hawaii coach.

He left for SMU, where his teams went 36-53 from 2008 to 2014, and he led the Mustangs to their first bowl game since the program received the NCAA "death penalty" in 1985. He resigned from SMU after starting last season 0-2, for "personal issues."

Jones returned to Hawaii and has been working with Saint Louis School quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Please, oh please let this happen, and then let's schedule UH OOC so that Chad can light their asses up and show him what he could have achieved had he put in effort at SMU!

I think even Hawaii knows better, but maybe not. Hope they at least know they could get him for about 500k.

I agree that Hawaii should know better. June is a legend there. But his offense is obsolete and a lot has changed in the game since they hired him the first time. June of course hasn't changed at all, which is a big part of the problem.

Then again, June may be the best candidate for that job. I would think its tough for Hawaii, with its location, recruiting issues, and conference affiliation, to attract talented coaching prospects.

Would not surprise me at all for Hawaii to bring June back. He was, after all, very successful in building a program there and his approach to recruiting is compatible with their budget. I think it would be interesting to see how he would do and I don't necessarily think he would fail...and he's made it clear that Hawaii is where he wants to work/live/retire

I wonder if some of our eventual castoffs will join him out there.

Would he get rid of the "Rainbow" part of their nickname again?

While the original site has been taken down, it looks like the meat has been attached to random site that does not work:

Also found it interesting that you can download the BP, sub agmt, and script.

Maybe a couple, but that assumes JJ actually identified them as players worth recruiting

$7.75 an hour - 50 grand for each time he shows up to a high school. 50 grand for each conference win.

June will get them to the Hawaii Bowl next year, we won't be quite good enough to go bowling yet.
