Paternalism isn't necessarily a bad thing. Also - knee jerk is the wrong description. I have read a bunch of articles on this and although there were seemingly racist events caused by idiot individuals, I don't see what the "institutional racism" claim is based on. Nobody has spelled that out. If it exists, then fine there is an issue that needed better CEO attention then it got. But since it has not been spelled out in anything I have seen - it feels like a political circus vs real issues.

Maybe he ignored them because their demands were not grounded in reality, or perhaps this is political in nature hidden behind "racism" claims. I guess I have seen enough of this to be highly skeptical and probably cynical also.

Well, seems like a lot of schools are going to deal with this. Most in the south. If one does not think racism exists, they live in a world next to Miss. or in Miss. UT and Jeff Davis, Really? REALLY? I went to SFSU, don't think that is an issue there.

I can imagine a few scenarios where paternalism can be beneficial, but it doesn't seem like it's helpful on an issue such as this where there's the potential for a strong disconnect between the minority and majority groups. Tends to come across as dismissive of the minority concerns.

Which actually sounds similar to one of the concerns that it sounds like is being raised -- the university may not actually have an institutional racism problem and the president may not be any sort of racist himself, but the students seem to feel like he's marginalized their concerns and this is the only way to have their voices heard.

Again, I'm not actually trying to get too deep into the details when it's likely impossible to really understand whether the students vs president are right, wrong, or indifferent. 'Knee-jerk' might have been a little harsh, but it's worth asking people with strong reactions based on limited information to reflect on the source of their instinctive judgments. Doesn't mean those judgments are inherently wrong, just that it's worth being aware of how your particular mind fills in the blanks of a story and why.

While I don't have a dog in this hunt at Missouri, I am concerned that we have seen the football tail wag the university dog. What happens at another major school where the football or basketball does something like this to get what they want?

We actually had a mini similar problem when I was there and Hayden Fry said SMU could not have a successful team without African Americans on the team. We over privileged white guys got very offended and threatened to let Hayden see what it would be like to field a team of 3 or 4. He quickly corrected himself to say we would not be as good of a team without the African Americans and when you have Jerry Levias and Rufus Cormier on your team to mention just two, the corrected statement could not be disputed.

I am surprised photos of the swastika has not appeared on the Internet. I would think something like that would have gone viral immediately.

From the description, it sounds like it was more bacterial than viral.

A COMMUNICATIONS professor at Mizzou attempted to stop a student journalist from taking pictures of the protest in a public area today. What the [deleted] is the world coming to?

I feel like we are watching another age of Marius take shape. Only 40 years until the plebs cheer Caesar crossing the Rubicon.
