bad memories of SMU's last trip to the Sun Bowl (bowl game, that is...not games against UTEP as a member of the WAC)

Chad Morris to Va Tech?

Postby SMU Football Blog » Mon Nov 16, 2015 12:13 pm

The only example of a 1 year HC with a losing record that left for a new job I can think of is Houston Nutt went 5-6 his 1 year at Boise and then went to Arkansas. Now that was 2 years after Boise was I-AA and Boise had gone 2-10 the year before in their first year in I-A.

Who was HC of Boise that 2-10 year? Interim HC Tom Mason, of course. *gasp*

Gene Chizak was 5-19 but in 2 years at Iowa St before getting Auburn job

True. But I was trying to think of 1 year coaches. As for Chizak as an example, Auburn is kind of unique situation as some people think that job is crazy and Chizak had been there previously.

Kiffin was only 7-6 in his 1 year at Tenn. Not quite a losing record.

Todd Graham was 7-6 in one year at Rice before bolting for Tulsa. He spent one year at Pitt (6-5...before losing to SMU in BBVA Compass) before leaving for AZ State. Lots of JJ implications there.

I was looking for 1 year coaches with a losing record that took another job. Can't think of any besides Nutt.

And Nutt was an exception because he was an Arkansas "favorite son". Without his history at Arkansas he would have never been considered.

Todd Graham had already left for the Sun Devil State when SMU beat Pitt in the BBVA Compass Bowl ... but I get your point.

CM was/is a great OC, but now he has to prove he can be the skipper, and he has to do it at SMU. I don't think the "Big Dogs" come knocking now until he flips a potential 1-11 team. I do not mean 11-1, you get my point. He is going to have to do at least what JJ did. With CM's resume, if he does that ... different story in my opinion. CM, knew what he was getting into. If he wanted to be the HC at a premier program, he should have stayed put. He would once again be leading one of the nations best offensives on the #1 ranked BCS school heading toward a National Championship run. The "Big Boys" would have come knocking after this year ... IMO. If that was his goal, he should have never pulled the trigger on SMU. He knew that, and he knew what he had in Clemson for 2015. Shame on him if he did ... I do not think he is that kind of person. Plus, he would have gained nothing and loss in the long run. Turn SMU around ... with his resume ... name your price and location CM.

I actually think he loves being back in Texas with all his contacts etc. I have some close friends who are close to him, and they say he is happy to back (very happy) in the Lone Star State. He knew it was going to be a challenge, and he wanted it. Now, if he is gone this year, or even the next (even if he is 6-6/7-5 and bowling, I don't see the Big Boys calling yet), that tells me we have bigger challenges behind the scenes that we need to be concerned with ... IMO. For me, VT is not a destination dream job either.

Chad Morris will be the first head coach since Ron Meyer to get hired away for a better coaching opportunity (if he so desires) but it will not be this year.

It's going to take HCCM longer to turn around SMU than what JJ did because he is in a much tougher conference with opposing coaches that recruit hard. This isn't CUSA.

makes a lot of sense. Seems like people forget that CM actually coached against SMU when he was at Tulsa. I believe the game was even at Ford Stadium in 2010 and even though Tulsa had a good season, SMU won the game. Doubt we had a good crowd that day, so CM saw the job and atmosphere first hand. And its hard to believe he would want to move his family again and have his son graduate from high school in Blacksburg Virginia or a lot of other places. Plus there is no way he didn't talk to friends, colleagues etc before taking this job.
