MissouriModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: MissouriGlad that SMU administration seems to be active and responding to this activity. Turner and staff always seem to handle these things pretty well. I'm not sure that demanding people going Greek take extra sessions in diversity is necessary but I can see adding an element to the Wellness classes and orientation periods as worth pursuing or discussing. Achieving certain percentages of enrollment will always open the door for heated debate, especially at a 'private' school.
Re: MissouriGreat! The thug anarchists have popped up at SMU now!!
Ignore their "demands". This is pure D crap, birthed by Obama, Democrats and our corrupt media. BTW - Hands up, don't shoot DID NOT HAPPEN.
Re: Missouri
Wow. Such insight contained in this post. I swear some of you force me to argue positions on this board that I don't always agree with. People should be able to express their opinions or struggles without being called things like "thug anarchists." I said this in another post, but more than anything that has happened at SMU recently, it's idiotic statements made on boards like this that really show things have not changed on campus and in the SMU community and is a major part in why both of my children have decided not to apply to SMU. Good job guys! Ponyfans.com voice of reason
Re: Missouri
ECM, that's a fair point if we are just discussing privilege. I can't argue against that. Likewise, I would never advise anyone to admit or acknowledge "white privilege." There is nothing good that could possible come from such an admission. I liken it to the "have you stopped beating your wife" question. There's no correct answer because of the assumptions made in the question. That being said, there is a fundamental difference between "privilege" and "white privilege." An African American can be just as successful as anyone, but we often have to answer questions about how we got to where we are that white men often don't have to answer People make assumptions about how we obtain wealth, i.e. are you a professional athlete or a drug dealer, that are not made about other races. As an example, a few years ago I spent a lot of time at Bob's Steak and Chop House. I was a regular and everyone knew me. When I arrived, I would pull up to the valet stand and they would take my car without giving me a ticket. One night, they forgot to remove the tag they put on my keys and when I got home, my wife noticed that instead of putting my name on the tag, the simply wrote the "N" word on the tag to distinguish my vehicle from others they parked. Although I was dropping a few hundred dollars a week in the restaurant, to the valets I was just another "N." Had I been a white male, I doubt seriously they would have used a derogatory term to identify me and my vehicle. I do not look for racism and generally do not allow the idiotic views of others affect my life, but I am not so naive to believe that people do not make assumptions about me that they do not make about others. Re: Missouri
I don't really want to get into this, but this post annoyed me. If your children are naive enough to believe that there are idiots on only a few select campuses like SMU then they are beyond help. You're going to find people that are racist anywhere. If they aren't going to apply to schools where it might exist they probably won't be going to college.
Re: Missouri
They are not naive. They know that this happens everywhere. It's just with my wife and I being alums and them hearing some of the things I experienced on campus combined with the things we discuss being said on these message boards, they really aren't interested in applying. That's all. And if you look at the declining number of African Americans who are attending SMU, my kids are not the only ones who feel this way. My only point was that posts like the one I quoted do nothing to improve the image of the university and is actually a hinderance. And if we are being honest, with their test scores, of they must attend a school with a number of racists students and alums, why wouldn't they go to one ranked higher than 61 in US News and World reports? Re: MissouriIt's an anonymous message board. If they took the time to read every schools boards I'm sure they would find similar comments. And so far, the posts have been about 15-1 against racist commentary . I wouldn't want to indict an entire university based on one comment on an ANONYMOUS message board.
Re: Missouri
I agree completely. And I admit, I have not discussed my experiences on the Hilltop on this message board. I save those for pay sites, but as a family, our discussions are not limited to what is said on anonymous message boards. It also includes personal experiences from both the recent and distant past. Re: Missouri
Fair point. I'm only basing my comments based on what I've seen on here. But again, you will find racism everywhere. I don't see the logic in nixing schools based only on what makes the news. But to each their own.
Re: MissouriPart of life includes dealing with racists (or elitists) of all colors and pocketbooks. There are white people who are as racist as they come and there are black people who are as racist as they come. There are rich people who look down there noses at others and there are poor people who decry the vapidness of the rich. There are skinny people who make fun of fatties and plus size people who look at skinny ones as sticks. We all have some people who don't like us for one reason or another. The key is that you don't let the haters (of whatever stripe) change you from you.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: MissouriExcellent post EastStang.
Re: Missourismudubs - if your kids want to go somewhere else because you think it is a better fit or a better school that is fine. If they want to go somewhere else because of what someone said on a message board i question if they are as bright as you claim. Either way, SMU will be just fine.
Re: Missouri
Yeah, people do bad things to each other. White people shoot black people, black people shoot white people, radical Muslims blow up people all over the world, etc etc etc. There's a horrible history of racial violence in this country and frankly all over the world, but the idiots at Missouri were not the victims of it. Some kid getting called a racial slur by some drunken idiot in college, while unfortunate, is not a national crisis. Someone drawing a "poop swastika" on a bathroom stall is not indicative of structural racism on campus. The protesters were clowns who actively pursued being victims and the media, which is so terrified of possibly being called racist, simply amplified their nonsensical cause instead of investigating their concerns. Over a week later, I still haven't heard a plausible explanation of why the Mizzou president needed to resign. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: MissouriMeanwhile, a communications professor at Missouri actively tried to suppress a student journalist's First Amendment rights through the use of force and as far as I know, she is still employed by the university. What planet are we living on? If the Mizzou president had to resign so some social justice warriors could get some retweets, why is she still employed? If that student journalist had been Black there is a ZERO percent chance Mizzou would've kept that professor on staff a week later.
This reminds me of the situation at OU. Stupid drunken frat kid is filmed using the N-word and is expelled by the university (which was unconstitutional) and was nationally ridiculed; meanwhile, black OU football player punches a white girl in the face because she directed a racial slur at him, and he got to stay atin school and has rushed for over 500 yards and 5 TDs this year. When did words matter more than actions? Since when is calling someone a word worse than using physical violence against them? 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
