Chad Morris could have been the OC at Texas 2 years agoChip Brown is all but explicitly saying that Charlie Strong will clean house on the offensive coaching staff at UT after the season. Interesting, I guess.
The only real interesting tidbit I saw was that when Charlie Strong took the UT job, he originally had different ideas for the coaching staff and wanted to hire either Tom Hermann or Chad Morris as his OC, but Patterson interfered. Supposedly Morris had a $5M buyout for any job but a head coach. Patterson wasn't willing to pay either's buyout and Strong brought his Louisville OC with him. Now, I will tell you that the article does read a tad like revisionist history in an effort to blame the departed AD for all UT's problems and Strong may have never really considered anybody but his current OC that he brought from Louisville, but that is the story.

I agree. You can't fault an AD for not agreeing to a $5M buyout for a coordinator. I don't know what Hermann 's buyout was after 1 year; not sure he would have taken it if offered either, frankly. Why would Hermann take a lateral move when he already worked for a known quantity in Urban Meyer who is one of best HC in country at one of the premier programs when he knew what he had at Ohio State and Texas clearly needed an upgrade in talent?
Re: Chad Morris could have been the OC at Texas 2 years ago
Maybe hiring Morris wasn't the best use of $5MM, but his other decisions were shockingly poor. The Texas Football program practically prints money: 1) he cannot afford to pay the lowest level coaches on the FB team $32K? 2) he cannot afford to buy a new jacket and shirt for FB players each year? 3) he cuts the ticket allowance for his staff by half? Do unto others before they do unto you!!

I don't think Nick Saban wants to be coach at Texas for any amount of money. Why would he leave Alabama where he is consistently vying for national titles to try and rebuild UT?
Re: Chad Morris could have been the OC at Texas 2 years agoI would still say the head job at SMU is better.

Re: Chad Morris could have been the OC at Texas 2 years agoWhen you talk about the revenue the Texas football program and brand generate, 5 mill is very little. I still can't believe they didn't keep Mac since he was so good with the media, LHN, rich and poor alumni, shaking hands and saying the right things but make him hire the best coordinators money could buy....offense, defense and special teams. The head coach position has changed dramatically at these big-time media draining programs to where I am not sure it is that good of a job compared to TCU or Baylor for guys who still want to coach.

Revisionist history from Chip "Burnt-Orange Till I Die" Brown? No way!!!
Re: Chad Morris could have been the OC at Texas 2 years agoChip Brown went to SMU and yes that was the story going around. Here's one contemporaneous confirmation--quoting Chip Brown from 2 years ago--there are more-why wouldn't he have been THE top candidate?
