Re: Report: smart to UGA
Guy with tons of experience coaching the team and a dozen 9 plus win seasons gets fired to bring the hotshot coordinator with 0 head coaching experience that chokes in big games to Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Ohio State....mkay
Re: Report: smart to UGA
Smart is a Georgia grad that played there and knows what it take to win at Georgia. Plus there is so much talent in that state that even you could coach them to 9 or 10 wins each year and not get blown out by Bama and not get taken to OT by Georgia Southern. And Richt was a coordinator before he went to Georgia as well.

I tend to agree with Pony Boss.
I get that every successful head coach had to be given his first shot, but the risk-reward factor in firing a proven winner and replacing him with the next big thing is a pretty ballsy move IMO. If you're firing a guy who's won 145 games then you better have a Chip Kelly or Dan Mullen lined up.
Besides, I hear South Carolina is interested in Smart. They'd be wise to let him go to USC - if he beats you the next three years you just HIRE HIM.

And there isn't that much talent in Georgia. Average at best.

Georgia is loaded with talent especially in comparison to the number of in-state Division 1A schools-big advantage for the flagship school of the state. Easily the most of the "Old South" states (not including Texas or Florida). Flagship school should get their share. And I contend there is no younger brother like Texas A&M or Florida St recruiting with the same minimum entrance standards. Georgia is a great job-usually considered among the Top 8 in the Country

Be careful what you wish for. Might be Ray Goff all over again. lol.
On a side note, it took Vince Dooley 17 years to win a national championship at UGA.

Smart has been talked about for coaching positions forever. He was waiting for a big job and he finally got it. I think it is a pretty good hire.

Dan Mullen hasn't done anything better at State that Richt did with Georgia. But yes, Mullen is a goos coach and he also was a coordinator before they hired him. Houston got rid of Levine who took them to a bowl game and then ended up with Herman. We;ll see how Richt does when he does not have all that Georgia talent going to him.

Not very smart at all. South Carolina would bankrupt that state to keep Smart there if that happened. Its not that easy.

Re: Report: smart to UGA
Herman would have been a better choice. UGAs main problem is offense. Richt didn't adust his offense for mobile qbs. They passed on Deshaun Watson, Nick Marshall, Cam Newton....last year's qb was a grad student from UVA. Poor qb play doomed Richt. Herman develops qbs.
Smart is a good old boy from the UGA family. I don't know what he will do for their offense.
And Georgia is a huge recruiting base. They supply talent to most of the Sec schools except for Aggie and gators.

Re: Report: smart to UGA
im not saying there is not talent in Georgia - obviously there is. But the better SEC teams are not dominated with Georgia talent. Alabama has about 15 players from Georgia on their entire roster. Florida, LSU, A&M etc about the same or less. They are average as far as the rest of the SEC states are concerned on a per capita basis. I'd take Louisiana, Texas Florida and Alabama over Georgia

I wound agree with that stang. Its generally viewed as the 4th or 5th based recruiting pool in the nation. Atlanta js the recruiting hub of most if the sec and half of the acc. Again there is no excuse for Rocht the o lose to mizzou, tennessee, and struggle with Georgia Southern. I think Herman is a better fit with the offensive talent in this state. Curious go see his Smart's choice for oc.
