Now, you cannot predict the future, but it is hard to not think that if Morris had stayed at Clemson and was the OC of the #1 ranked team that he would have been at the top of the search committee's lists at most of these big openings. As many have pointed out, 2-12 is a tough sell to alums regardless of the talent that he inherited. Timing is everything and if he does the job here, he will certainly get his shot, but wonder if he wakes up and feels a tinge of regret that he did not stick around at Clemson one more year.

Regret what? Not getting a shot at the ECU job?

Norvell was considered by many to be among the top OC's in the country (third highest paid) and he's now in Memphis so it ain't like a top coordinator is always going to get a top job. It helps if you're under Nick Saban.

Odom was already the DC at Mizzou, so he had an inside track to that job.

Besides, you never know how these things work out. He makes one or two wrong calls as the OC and Clemson is at 10-2 or 9-3 and all he's done is wasted a year. No point looking back.

If he did regret it he obviously could not say so publicly. But with all the openings and being on the number 1 team in the nation South Carolina or another P5 school would have been in the picture. Coach Morris has been considered the number one coordinator in the country for a couple of years.

I don't think he regrets it. He has a great salary, back in the place he wants to be, and has much looser leash than most schools. I'm sure he saw that you screw up like JJ did and have mediocre results through your term and you are still going to coach through your contract. I know Morris is a young guy so he's not going down the JJ route and based on the analysis provided in the recruiting section. Our teams growth is an a great upward trajectory.

He will get a much better opportunity from turning around SMU than from still being the OC at Clemson IMO. Turn around SMU (which he will), and he's probably the front runner for any open P5 job in Texas, which he wants to stay in.

When he got the job at SMU, he said he had passed on other opportunities to wait for the right one in Texas. He wanted to come home. I hope he has a happy birthday on the recruiting trail today.

No coach would look like they have regrets even if they do. I think he regrets the talent that is here and that it will take longer than he expects to rebuild.
