Members of an exclusive club will not expand that club by extending membership to others unless they are directly benefitted by doing so, and those benefits outweigh the costs of losing some of the exclusivity. What direct benefits would the P5 gain here?

bingo. No incentive for the P5 to become the P6 for those already in the cartel.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Nonsense. This is an NCAA matter. The real pet peeve of the remaining 5 (Big 12, Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Pac 12) is that the others (MWC, Sunbelt, American, CUSA, MAC) aren't competitive and would not allow the P5 to legislate stipends and other things they want to do with their money. If the American is invested in taking up those costs that the P5 want to do, then there should not be a problem because the American would not be a nuisance. Also, the P5 benefit by having the American be considered P6 games to satisfy the one Power team requirement. If the American can get ESPN to pay TV money, and get a contract on one of the Remaining NY6 bowls (Fiesta, Cotton, Peach) then it would de facto be a P6 and you don't need the "P5" to approve. Seriously some of you here act as if all these power conferences are deeply in cahootz with each other and actually like each other....nothing further from the truth...they would all love to see the other conferences collapse and they be the king conference of cfb. American needs to step up and take it...it will not be given.

You become a nuisance by taking the pie from the other members at the table. Whymake a p6 when you can write an exception clause like p5 conferences already have? Example Byu is considered p5

Lay down the pipe bro it's simple economics: those with money don't want to give up their shares. Just because you want a p6 doesn't mean common sense and logic in the real world stop happening
