It is a '79 team. Jim Bob started the '80 season at SMU. During two a days he was designated to be red shirted. He wasn't interested in that deal and left SMU. He ended up at Ga. Tech and played for them.

The decision to redshirt Jim Bob was a shock to him and the team.

Yeah, I might be wrong about it being Jim Bob's senior year in 79. Didn't look it up in the "Bible".

Not sure why it was a shock to Jim Bob that he might be redshirted. Everybody must've known he wasn't in the picture any more since Mike Ford was coming back from his knee injury that year. I guess you mean by started is that he was on the roster during 2 a days.

That would be a correct assumption. Jim Bob started the 80 season with SMU and ended it at Ga. Tech. Jim Bob was the returning starting QB from the '79 season. He had Ford and Fisher competing for the QB spot. McIhenney was a freshman and not slated to be in the top two depth chart at the beginning of two a days. Of course all this changed rather quickly during two a days.

There was little doubt that Ford would be the starter so it wawsn't an issue of Jim Bob starting. It was a shock because Jim Bob was 1) popular with his teammates and 2) was the returning starting QB. Jim Bob had a bad scrimmage during two a days (first or second scimmage of two a days) and the decision to red shirt him was made after the scrimmage. Many of the Jim Bob's teammates felt this was unfair and that the coaches were using it as an excuse to move Jim Bob out of the QB competition (and make room for someone else). Jim Bob left the team and many teammates felt he had been treated unfairly.

As things were, this too past and the '80 season was successful.

you ought to market it as the Class that turned around the SMU program(for better or worse) because that freshman class was probably the best in the country in 1979. I belive from 1980- 1983 SMU had either the best record or second best winning percentage in the country going 8-4, 10-1, 11-0-1 and 10-2 Very few programs have had that type of influx in talent compared to the previous talent level of the team. They struggled in 1979 but the talent was obvious.

Boss, What is the story behind the ball? Is it a game ball or a ball the team handed out to VIPs and others? It might make a differnce in its value.

The football is not a game ball--it is a tan ball with a 1/4 panel of the ball being off-white and featuring "SMU MUSTANGS" in red and blue type. It looks like more of a promotional ball that they probably had all the players sign.

All balls, including game balls, were that configuration. There would be a table full of balls for the tea to sign in the locker room from time to time. Game balls were awarded the day after the game and delivered at a later date with the game score on it. Only wins earned a game ball. So if it has a specific game form '79 and it was a win, then it very well could be a game ball.

Charles Waggoner (In my opinion The BEST of the 7 running backs signed along with James and Dickerson) only played his freshman year hen he was injured. So that would narrow it down to that one year
