SMU has sights set on an undefeated season to replace postseason glory

UNIVERSITY PARK - Having watched his team get outrebounded, 45-20, and his acclaimed guard make only one of 13 shots, coach John Beilein managed to find a positive in Michigan's 82-58 loss to SMU.

"That team in this place is as good as any team in the country," he said. "The stuff that they're running, you just don't see it a lot in the college ranks. They just pick you apart and pick you apart and no answers. We could not guard them in any way. And I don't know who guards them."

At 7-0 and ranked 18th, SMU is one of only eight undefeated teams, joining Michigan State (11-0), Purdue (11-0), Xavier (10-0), Iowa State (9-0), South Carolina (8-0), Arkansas-Little Rock (8-0) and Oklahoma (7-0).

Marching to an angry drumbeat, their steps muffled by a finite season, the Mustangs are determined to make noise come March by running the table.

"That's our goal, to go undefeated for the whole year," said forward Jordan Tolbert, the American Athletic Conference player of the week after a 23-point, 9-rebound performance against Michigan. "We know that's going to be pretty tough, so we've got to stay on top of that."
