#11 for HP was (I believe) SMU great Lance McIlhenny.
When your dad takes you to games like this one, you grow up loving football.

I was at that game and as a HP grad it was really painful. The Plano crowd was so loud.

A few years later, HP got Plano back after a big comeback.Terry Webster wrote:I was at that game and as a HP grad it was really painful. The Plano crowd was so loud.

The next year (1978), Houston Stratford (led by Craig James) beat them in the state title game at the Astrodome.

OT - Greatest HSFB Game Ever
State '78 It was always a chuckle watching James bust through the line with 4 defenders on him as he rambled for 20 more yards.

He beat Plano pretty much by himself that day.pwnyxpress wrote:State '78 It was always a chuckle watching James bust through the line with 4 defenders on him as he rambled for 20 more yards.

Plano 29, HP 28 was 1977. The HP comeback (from down 3-21) was three years later in 1980: HP 23, Plano 21. Final game in the series was 1984, when HP dominated Plano much more thoroughly than the 17-7 score would indicate.gostangs wrote:it was the next year I believe.

And immediately after the game he announced his commitment to SMU in front of press conference to gain maximum exposure. It was a great day-I remember it well

Had a buddy at SMU who played in that game. Having graduated from boarding school in Mass, I only saw a highlight of the game. When they won the espy, he was non-plussed to say the least when anyone talked about it.Stallion wrote:Greatest comeback in High School Football History ends in disaster and tears

BTW didn't want to start new thread but on FoxSports SW Cuero has produced a film about the history of their Football program like Highland Park did. It plays every once in awhile. Its interesting because SMU has been the favorite landing spot for so many Gobblers. Video include interviews of SMU football alums Henry Sheppard, Arthur Whittington, Larry Whittington, David Hill, Marion Harper-I'm forgetting someone

this thread pushed some memory buttons, so I'm glad you posted it. When I was looking back on some timelines to see if some of the people I now/were teammates/were classmates/were coaches of some of the teams involved, I found out that a friend from back in the day and former teammate is now the OC at Plano East.

Re: OT - Greatest HSFB Game Ever
I went to the 77 game with a bunch of SMU buddies with 1 or 2 from HP. We didn't get in until
almost halfway through the 2nd quarter because of traffic. I think the attendance was 45000+
which I'm thinking was the UIL attendance record for a HS game in Texas maybe nation.
Hated Plano because they beat my brother's 1972 supposedly #2 ranked Longview team 26 - 0
in the first round. Ended up rooting for them to pull off the comeback.
Little did I know
I'd move to enemy territory about 17 years later.

I know how you feel. I cannot believe that Joey is actually the HC at Plano East and that Rob's little brother is the OC.RGV Pony wrote:this thread pushed some memory buttons, so I'm glad you posted it.
