Re: Houston opens next year at OU?Strongly agree with cal. And apparently Rick hart does also based on where our scheduling is heading. Smu responds when we get relevant. We took over the garden for NIT. We had a great turn out in Birmingham for an average bowl several years back. There are lots of examples.
There is no way to say the issue is with our own fans until we have evidence of not showing up for relevant sports. The opposite is true currently. It won't happen overnight but consistent winning will fix our football attendance, at least above the embarrassing level.
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?
You are undoubtedly right...at least I hope you are. The problem is not with our fans (or should I say lack thereof?). I look forward to tuning in tonight and watching our (clearly relevant) bball team play in front of a sold out and packed Moody.
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?Would you rather have 1,500 there?
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?You may disagree and that is fine - but don't try to extend my argument into the realm of the absurd to do so as I will call you on it every time.[/quote]
I was with you until you had to take this parting shot. I believe you were the one who 1st tried to compare our football situation with what has happened in basketball attendance wise. Forgive me if I don't see the Chad Morris hire quite as impactful as the Larry Brown hire and I certainly hope we don't have to downsize Ford because we can't attract 30k. That was why I could not resist the Incarnate Word/Abilene Christian comments. I have no problem with what I see happening with future scheduling and I do believe in Chad Morris. If he can't get this thing turned around, then I'm not sure it will happen in my lifetime. Bottom line in all of this is that we are all tired of those 63-0 beat downs and our [deleted]* poor attendance at football games. I grow equally tired of SMU fans putting down other schools as inferior after they kick our arses. When I was in school, it was common to see the "our maid went to UT" signs in the crowd and I was always embarrassed to see those signs. Too many SMU students/alumni come off as being spoiled brats thinking they are better than everyone else and I've always thought that was a big part of why so few DFW sports fans support our school. I wish that could change and SMU could become Dallas' college program. I'd like to see that in my lifetime but as I sit here in SC watching Clemson about to play for a title, I'm envious that both my children graduated from that school and sometimes wish I could have a "do over" and attend a public rather than a private school myself. After all, my life experience has taught me that I did not have to have a sheepskin from SMU to have enjoyed the career I did. I feel better now for having gotten that off my chest. Gotta go work out now. Go Ponies!
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?
rest assured the 1500 will always be there. It's the rest of our fans I'm worried about.
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?CP - I never said we would sell out every game, only that our attendance will improve just like in basketball where we don't sell out every game but our attendance has improved. I think that you and I are on the same page.
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?I think we all want the same thing for SMU, so back to the original post that started this thread. Congrats to Houston for representing the AAC proudly this year and I hope they kick OU's arse to open the 2016 season. Let's just hope Chad can revive our program so SMU can contribute to an up and coming AAC. P5 status might never be in our future, but hopefully we can join our conference mates who have shown the ability to compete with and win their share of games against P5 schools
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?Let's hope we build an IPF and get new band music
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?7,000 showed up to Moody to watch a SMU team without any chance to win anything, play a horrible opponent. It was packed. Explain that, oh people who say SMU fans are the worst?
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?
nobody ever said SMU fans are the worst...in fact, what few fans we have might arguably be the best and most loyal fans in all of college football..to remain supportive of a program that for the most part of the last 30 years has been an embarrassment. It's good to see enthusiasm (and bandwagon fans) return to Moody. I sincerely hope Chad Morris & his staff can resurrect this football program and we can someday witness the same kind of support at Ford no matter who we might be playing. I think everyone (and that includes you) understands it is a little more challenging to attract 32,000 vs 7,000 fans and will take longer to rebuild football vs bball
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?It was a great turn out for a below average opponent. Proud of our fans for sticking with this team, and glad Dallas is developing a love of college basketball.
I don't expect much of a difference between basketball and football actually. When we start knocking off teams of note than we will build our own fan base. The theory that it is harder in football can't really be tested until we start actually having some success. I think it will happen virtually immediately as soon as we are consistently good. Backing into 6 wins (ala June) after going "o for september isn't considered above average to the typical Dallas area fan or even our own fan base, small as it is. Agree with the statement that the folks who have stuck with SMU football for 25 + years are the most hard core battle tested fans in the country. No sane person pays good money to take that kind of abuse for that long a period.
Re: Houston opens next year at OU?
Yeah man - thank you. It was priceless doing the warchant once the game was settled ![]() Noles fans (besides the one who tried to run me over after the game) were pretty level headed. At the biergarten the night before one dude was really nervous "I don't like this matchup, Greg Ward is a beast and your D plays hard." I saw him again at the same biergarten after the game, I bought him a beer.

Re: Houston opens next year at OU?
Strange fit for what Herman normally likes to do with his QB's. Although another top talent to Houston.
