SMU Drops Conference Opener, 56-54, At Tulsa
Adams, A. Froling lead all scorers with 17 points each
TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – Alicia Froling recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points with 15 rebounds, but SMU fell 56-54 in its American Athletic Conference opener at Tulsa Saturday afternoon.
In the fourth quarter, SMU (5-7, 0-1 American) used a 6-0 run to build up a 47-41 lead with just over six minutes to play, before the Golden Hurricane (5-8, 2-0 American) chipped away and brought the deficit to one, 52-51, with 1:40 remaining. Alicia Froling stretched the SMU lead to three, 54-51 with a jumper, but the Tulsa offense managed back-to-back jumpers and a free throw in the final minute to claim the game, 56-54.
Trailing 25-23 at halftime, SMU quickly tied the game using two of Keely Froling’s four made free throws. After falling behind by four, 39-35, with 1:24 left in the third quarter, SMU found a surge started by a McKenzie Adams free throw and went on a 6-0 run to take a 41-39 lead and close the third quarter.
Solid defense in the first half by both teams led to a 25-23 lead at halftime. The Golden Hurricane edged SMU 13-11 in the first quarter, and each team managed 12 points in the second quarter. SMU held Tulsa to a 34.5 shooting percentage, and the top-rated defense in the league allowed just a 38.5 field goal percentage for the half.
Including Alicia Froling, who now has 11 career double-doubles and has scored at least 10 points in nine games this season, three Mustangs scored at least 10 points. Adams tied Alicia Froling with a game-high 17 points and grabbed three rebounds. The Arkansas transfer also finished with two assists and a steal. Keely Froling made her first start of the season, and was a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 10 points with nine rebounds, reaching double figures for the second time in three games.
The Mustangs return home Tuesday, hosting Temple at 7 p.m. CT in Moody Coliseum.
