Michigan Offers DannaModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower in the last two years only one school was desperate enough to sign two JC QBs in one year-and that was SMU in 2004-let's see that's out of 236 some odd classes. Pretty desperate-most schools have no problem cheery picking the quality Division 1A transfers.
Only problem with that is the transfer having to sit a year, which still means the need for a JUCO. It appears to me the reasoning behind gettng two is that we are having difficulting in getting a prime JUCO so we take 2 hoping that 1 will work out. I would be very happy to see 1 GOOD Juco QB and a solid D-1 transfer to follow up the next year. While all the time hoping that Willis will develope into what we want.
The fact is that going into next year, we would have had one upperclassman at QB, Phillips. We would have had two if Meeks had stuck around. But he left, so we would have had one. Which means we would have taken a JUCO QB anyway. JUCO, not transfer, because we need someone who can compete NOW, not a year from now.
Then, Phillips is out. So, you have to take a second JUCO. That isn't a failure of recruiting. The failure was before PB got here, which is why we had to get 2 JUCO QBs 2 years ago. Having to take two now is just one of those [deleted] happens things because of transfers and injury. And you want JUCOs because, again, they can compete right away. It is 100% logical to take 2 JUCO QBs right now, and it has nothing to do with PB recruiting failures. This program has momentum, and nobody in their right mind would trust the sustainment of that momentum to a RS Frosh QB who has never been in a college football game before. I don't care how good a guy looks in practice, you need compitition at the QB position until someone proves that they can show something in a game. So, stop ripping on PB, because that isn't his fault - he got two 3 star QBs in here to begin with, got two more HS QBs last year, and another this year. And stop ripping on Willis, because this is absolutely ZERO reflection on him as a QB. It is just the smart thing to do. You saw how well redshirt frosh Bomar played this year, and he was a 5 star recruit. Yeah, he got better as the season went on, but do we really have the luxury to throw half a season away next year and let a guy develop? Hell no. And, yes, I acknowledge that Willis was only a two star QB, but how many three star QBs are going to come in when they see two three star QBs one class ahead of them? You and I both know that until SMU starts winning, we get three star players in here by giving them the opportunity to compete for PT right away. Not by telling them to redshirt a year and sit behind a couple of highly regarded QBs for two years before they see the field. As a final note, I am not about to discount Willis' talent before I see him in the Spring game, on the field. One thing about Bennett is that the two star players he has picked up have actually shown pretty well so far. One thing that PB HAS shown me over the last two years is that his ability to evaluate talent is pretty darn good. Comparing the 2 star recruits PB got to the 2 star recruits Cavan had is laughable. Totally different league. I just want to make sure nobody on here thinks I am ripping Willis, because I haven't even seen him play. I am no sunshiner, I am pretty blunt about where our program is, and where it is going. We absolutely HAVE to have a high quality QB in as a transfer if our program is going to succeed next year, IMHO. And succeed means going to a bowl. A lower tier QB like Eckert or Romo can "drive the bus", and probably help us be competitive like we were last year. But for our program to take another step forward, getting a good, mature QB, and in our case two, is key.
No MOST programs would not have signed two JUCOs in 2004 or 2006. Most would have signed one and hoped to pull out a Division 1A transfer so you wouldn't have two QBs in the same class. This is more of a rip at the SMU than Phil Bennett. Most coaches given the freedom to admit who they wanted would have staggered the classes of the QBs. Not a single team in the Rivals Database from 2002-2006 has signed two JUCo QBs in the same year except for SMU in 2004.
Obviously, given a perfect situation, SMU would stagger QB classes. But given the situation, not recruiting restraints, we can't. A lot of schools will sign multiple QBs out of HS in a recruiting class, especially when the shelf is bare. We are doing the same thing - we have no junior or senior QBs, so you bring in two JUCOs. It is the circumstance, not the recruiting standards, that are having an impact in this particular situation.
Or it means that for whatever reason Phillips is moving to another position, while Romo and Eckert are graduating, so no matter how much you like Willis, you are one play away from having zero quarterbacks on your roster with any post-high school experience. By all accounts, Willis will be a good player, but not wanting to throw him in the deep end at the beginning of his redshirt freshman year is anything but illogical. "What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"

every other school in the country seemed to plan around that problem during last 5 years-SMU could have too-again not particularly a shot at Phil Bennett but more to the point the inability of SMU to recruit Division 1A transfers. It also brings up the issue whether 2 freshman should have been recruited last year IF that is the plan.
You cannot just go out and recruit D-1A transfer students. They have to contact you first before you can talk to them... at least that is the rule. Whether most schools follow that rule is a good question, but with our past, we have better be following the rules.
Thanks!!! Who would of thunk it. I really need to read the rule book a little closer. And yet UH, Baylor, UTEP(2), UH, and Tulane on our schedule have signed one in recent years. SMU had Division 1A QBs contact the school but couldn't get his hours to transfer. There are plenty of Division 1A QBs looking to transfer-SMU doesn't get them because of its transfer rules.
MAYBE PB RAN THEM OUT AND CREATED HIS OWN SITUATION
Or at least redshirted one of the two QBs he took, especially since you had a RS-Soph CP there. He had his mind made up not to redshirt either one last year, and then again this year.
stallion, how would you know that we have had QB's contact us to transfer here? If you know that, who was it?
------ The U of H QB likes to throw to our guys-- perhaps he should have transferred to SMU a while back ![]()
