SMU back in on Jerell Norton

Postby Horseshoe » Sun Dec 18, 2005 10:19 pm

The Rival three star prospect had originally committed to Tulsa several months ago but to be sure he was making the right decision he continued to visit other programs which didn't set in good for the Golden Hurricanes.

"I'm no longer committed to them," Norton said of Tulsa. "They pulled my scholarship because I visited TCU this weekend."

With other offers on the table Norton says it's basically down to a three team race between TCU, Arkansas, and SMU.

In addition to Tulsa, SMU, TCU and Arkansas, he reports also having offers from Oklahoma State, Kansas and Baylor.

If I remember correctly, I think he plays QB in high school, but rivals says he's being recruited as a WR/athlete. I think it said 6-0, 180, 4.4 (might be a little off on the size, but I do remember the 4.4).

He put on a Michael Vick clinic against Lake Highlands. He is a very good player. I do not want him going to TCU!

I'll take a Vick-like athete at SMU.
And I'm with you on the not-at-froggie-High sentiment.

Is it just me, or does this guy (and Sanders, from Marlin) sound like an unreal athlete?

Once again another potential impact player, who would look good in a Mustang uniform.

First, I have never seen this guy live so might have just seen some bad film, however:

In all three of the highlight reels, I never saw Norton break a tackle or run away from players. Infact everytime he was hit, he went down. And all except once he was run down from the back.

Anyone seen him in person and know differently from what the film is showing because right now I am inclined to let Tulsa keep him?

I like LakeHighlandsPony's description better.
Unless he signs elsewhere -- in which case, I hope you're right that he's overrated.

How many three star rival's have flopped and how many have been way better than their five star counterparts? Rival's stars are an inexact science. DeMyron Martin was only a two star and yet...turned out pretty good.

However, that is beside the point, as I was simply giving my opinion on what I saw in the films.

Well I have beening going to all the Allen HS games for awhile, I watched Demyron run over people for a whole year and couldn't believe that he wasn't rated higher.

Norton played against Allen in the playoff's and is as good as other's have expressed. They ran him all over the field, he caught passes, ran the ball, think he had a couple of QB plays, but one play he got a short pass, broke down the sideline, had a few guys chasing him, another coming across the field at him, and at the 20 yardline put it in overdrive and went into the endzone untouched. The last 20 yards was like he was shot out of a cannon. He just made some plays all night.

probably because Martin had an ankle injury during his junior year that caused him to miss most of the year-which was probably a pretty lucky break for SMU. Also, his best games in his senior year came during the second half and during the playoffs. There is always going to be guys like this. I've never denied it. In fact, I was the first one to monitor DeMyron Martin on this board-even before Rivals' first report-commenting what a great senior year he was having in at least 4 posts before Rivals ever norticed him.

What?...you keep a little diary of when you announce things and then when rivals announces the same thing...it must be a killer trying to get your fat head through doorways.

Hate to break this also, but Norton goes TCU. Bennett is doing a good job, but the competition is just phenomenal right now for kids in N. Texas. (did I spell that right?) Obviously some of the best football in the country right here in our recruiting bases, but dang if not everybody and their dog isn't sitting on their porches.
