I wouldn't use the word "vastly" outcoached. Jank did a great job and I think he will
continue our momentum if he stays. But, Larry has won me over with his style of play.
In northern Illinois where I grew up, my coach wanted us to press all over the floor and
jack up lots of shots. He said if we got 100 shots we would win any game. Larry is strong
on sharing the ball, taking good shots, and playing strong defense, and I must admit his
way can be very exciting. I love the way these guys play.

Recruiting is still the way to winning. You will probably win if you've got the horses.
Larry's history and experience brings recruits to him and helps him to close the deals.
Jank doesn't have that value yet, but I hope he gets it when he wins as a head coach.
One area in which Jank does beat Larry is in Press Conferences. Jank is sharp, funny, and
very communicative when he is interviewed so hopefully that will also come across during
recruiting visits.

Didn't Jank get us the two incoming Australian players?

I don't know what his role was in their recruitment, but I'm very confident that LB was the attraction and the closer. I like what I've seen and heard of the man and I hope he is the answer for the future, but it still doesn't change the fact that he isn't Larry Brown the hall of fame coach and winner of both NCAA and NBA championships.

Jank is going to be great. I hope we hold onto him.

One issue is that Jank plays a lot of zone in games and in practice. When he was coach, we ate the zone for lunch in offensive sets. We struggle against it with LB because LB doesn't practice against it as much.

I love Larry, he is a great coach. Not arguing Jank is better. But there are times, for example in the Tulsa game when they have a player destroying us off the dribble, where a zone would have tightened things up. If we had switched to zone when Nic went out, we win that game.

I think you are slightly off. We did not play that much more zone with Jank and pretty much only did it when in foul trouble. Jank benefited from the team being deeper, fresher, and generally playing weaker competition. Don't get me wrong I think he did great and has proven he can be a good in game coach (there was a reason he was high on the list for the HC job), he also has been a lead recruiter on some of our bigger gets. The only question is how much of our recruiting pitch/effectiveness is SMU versus "come play for LB". The last piece IMO to firmly establish SMU as a program is a couple of seasons of NCAA tournament success (sweet 16 or better). We should of had that this year and last year but we got NCAA'd.

I might have enjoyed Jank's version of offense better than Larry's - but that may have had to do with the personnel (and may not have worked with a younger team) or perhaps might not have worked as well against better competition.

Better Competition? You mean like Stanford and Michigan?

I'll give you Michigan. But per RPI, the best team we have played this year is Colorado - and Gonzaga and the top half of our conference are all stronger than Stanford. And I would argue that our conference is under-ranked to begin with.

Also guarded the line way better with Jank. LB is much more into the 90s style defense of collapse the paint at all costs.

I think there is a little bit of a different reason.

With LB, we play man, but help from the backside. Helps with overall defense, but leaves the backside three wide open. It also keeps us from being able to run.

With Jank, less help when we played man, plus a mix of 1-3-1, 2-3, and a little 3-2. We got burned in a couple of games from outside, but the drop in help defense allowed us to defend the three a little better, especially when we played 1-3-1 or 3-2, and it also allowed us to get out on the break a little more.
