You would definitely want him on the squad for "special situations." Our players wouldn't have to worry about taking cheap shots from the other team.

Players like Woods, Sasser, Hopkins, etc jacked up so many shots that they are high on a lot of the scoring lists - they also started all four years and got LOTS of shots over a long period of time against bad competition - but if you look at % made lists, some other names start to pop up higher.

Chad Allen was a pure shooter - better than Woods - clutch like Nic. Even Jay Poerner had a higher 3 point % than Woods knocking down 57-153 as a big man.

Not saying Allen would make my all time team - but perhaps on the bench with Gerald Lewis and Mike Wilson - who I would take over Woods and Sasser.

Consider who the competition was that these guys played against...SWC was better than the watered down WAC top to bottom. Sasser and Woods got to run up #s on Nevada, Boise, UTEP, LA Tech, Hawaii, San Jose and cakewalk OOC opponents and Sasser never had to play what were the "good" former WAC teams like BYU and Utah.

In his four years, the highest ranked teams that Sasser ever took the court against were TCU and Tulsa - A Sasser team NEVER beat a reanked team in his 4 years.

The Shumate teams played some "fire the coach" schedules that included a long list of top 25 teams in OOC. At one point they played #6, #1, #5 in a three game stretch.

Stanford and Tennessee were both top 10 teams when we played them during the Sasser years, but you're right we never beat a ranked team. I guess Purdue was after he left.

You are right - his teams were 0-11, not 0-9 vs. ranked opponents.

From Shumate until the AAC, we really did not play all that many ranked teams at all. There was a span during Dement years where we played 66 un-ranked teams in a row and longer spans in the Doh years.

How did Doh manage to coach for 6 years and only play one team that was ever ranked (Memphis on a few occasions). Thank god for the AAC and Larry Brown.

I think Max Williams has to get a mention as well in the top 20. Loved to watch him play.

Krebs naturally. And maybe Art Barnes who, IIRC, was the senior captain of the team that lost to USF with Russell and (KC) Jones should be on the squad.

Dave Piehler...purest shooter I EVER have seen. His dunk against Kansas at Moody tore the roof down.

Butch was the glue that held some pretty good teams together. He ran the offense with precision and made some flashier guys look better than they really were. Billy Allen and Dave Piehler also put on an impressive show at guard. Nic is going to be a legend, but I have seen them all over the years and I have no doubt that any of these three mentioned older guys would be starters in today's program.

Billy Allen was a nasty, tough and smart player...had the privilege to guard him once when we played HP...I "held him" to a double double IIRC. He definitely deserves mention, and was the BB equivalent to Lance with the Pony Express.

Clayton Korver was drafted by the Oakland Raiders. The days when SWC basketball resembled hockey and each team had an "enforcer". Clayton was in a class to himself on that.
