Re: StudentsIt really is the mob system now. I would say now that we are two years into it we can go ahead and admit it doesn't work and go back to the old way. There is no fun fraternity guy that is going to earn his points at volleyball games and soccer games so he can sit in the MOB. Just let the basketball fans that are true basketball fans get that spot by camping out - coming early or whatever - and go from there. Get someone in charge of it without controlling it too much. Hand out sheets that give instructions - everyone does that at the bigger basketball schools. Also - oversell that sucker. The more packed in there the better.
Re: Students
Why not? He's the voice/face of the student body. Somebody needs to take responsibility. Why NOT him?
Re: Students
How about instead of expecting Carlton to fix it himself, we encourage him to FIND someone who can take on that responsibility? What about a FY or Soph student, someone still with a few years left at SMU, who has vision and enthusiasm and spirit and great ideas for melding together whoever shows up and who can put in the time and effort to building up that group. And that person shouldn't be expected to do it alone - it has to be a core group of say, 6-10 students who decide they are going to be dedicated to making that section one of the most feared in the nation when it comes to devastating get-in-the-opponent's-head chants and good-natured game-time chicanery. Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.
Re: Students
I was just referring to the need for a "quick fix" for Thursday night... somebody to put out an APB. You're right, the whole thing needs to be re-worked. Just leave out the SMU vice-president for student affairs or you'll end up with what you've got right now. Maybe President Bush could take the lead on this. He's got free time (and knew how to have a good time back in the day).
Re: StudentsAbsolutely zero need to worry about Thursday night it will be packed and sold out
Re: StudentsLove how I got piled on by a certain group of posters for saying the MOB was dead after the introduction of the points system. Hate that I was right, but it was so obvious what was going to happen.
Hart should have canned the points system in the middle the game yesterday and opened up the entire allotment for camping out. It's laughable how bad it has failed. Academia hard at work with theoretical better ideas as per usual. Usually, the team that scores the most points wins the game - John Madden
Re: Students
I don't remember anyone piling on you or disagreeing that the MOB is nowhere near the same. It's the fact that you and all the other students have the the same opportunity to be there as those that are. The original MOB decided it wasn't important enough and they aren't there now. Am I wrong about that? The rules are the rules and if you don't like it, do something about it. Have a group go talk to Rick Hart, or the marketing office. Voice your concerns. Isn't that part of what college is all about, being heard and pushing for change if you disagree with something? SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four

Re: Students
Most of the original MOB has graduated and are likely priced out of the arena. Unless they still have young alum pricing, my guess is that most of them are watching the games on TV or at a bar. "Moral Victories Make Me Sick" - TR

Re: StudentsI understand the theory behind a points system but it does not translate into support at other sports events (even if they did make the kids stay). Basketball tickets should be available for those who care the most about basketball and are willing to commit. I don't see the camping thing going on for long, but I think SMU basketball will evolve in its own way. Whether that will result in an intimidating Moody I rather doubt. I just propose to enjoy the games and hope the good times and the large attendances continue. It's a really fun place to be.

Re: Students
I tweet at Hart constantly and so should everyone else. He is all over twitter and I know he sees it. For obvious reasons he isn't going to engage anyone about it publicly. I also will tell anyone that will listen that the system is a joke. I am very passionate about this because it directly impacts the experience of the team and the rest of the arena. I know that it will change, I just don't know how or when. I love you gave the "same opportunity" for tickets argument like people have been doing for years. It sounds wonderful to say but it is a terrible argument for purposes of the MOB. Just stop. It isn't working. In fact, it is so bad that it's embarrassing now. You are a MOB apologist if you lay the "same opportunity" thing out there. Think about what the points system is technically telling us: the students with the most passion for athletics generally are, as a group, brutally awful fans. Does that make any sense to anyone? It shouldn't. I could go on and on but everyone just bug the crap out of Hart and something will eventually happen. Usually, the team that scores the most points wins the game - John Madden
Re: Students
Couldn't agree more.
Re: StudentsThe point system was a good attempt at leveraging our one great program to boost attendance for the other poor programs. I agree that it needs to be canned, and that they should make a first come first serve for the tickets. The camping out in tents really made it seem "big program" like. I wish there was a way to drive attendance to the football game with our basketball program but people will try to game the system.

Re: Students
Athletics are appealing to students because they can enjoy the high energy then take it out to the bar afterwards. No one wants to get hyped for 2 hours then go to the library. Its not an excuse, its just the mindset of an 18-21 year old.
Re: Students
No, it's definitely an excuse. And a sorry/weak one at that.
Re: StudentsYesterday, there were a lot of empty seats in the student sections and some random folks behind the SMU bench. There was only that one section of MOB fans in the middle section. If students that are "true hoops fans" wanted to go yesterday, there were plenty of seats. I passed a couple dudes playing hoops behind their frat house on the way to the car. Maybe they left early.
