Area Top 100

Postby mustangbill67 » Sun Dec 25, 2005 2:31 pm

In the DMN December 25 area top 100, SMU is listed as an interest on the following players. Does anyone know which of these we have offered, which may not be academically qualified and which we realistically have a chance on assuming we want them.

1. Justin Jordan RB Plano (89)
2. Brandon Themilus RB FM Marcus (90)
3. Philip Burley WR Scurry-Rosser (63)
4. Andrew Novak WR Ennis (86)
5. Greg Rideuax WR Plano (100)
6. Soloman Orr OL Mesquite (84)
7. Jordan Shoemaker OL Midlothian (92)
8. Kendall Briscoe DT Lincoln (74)
9. Jake Behning LB Denton (93)
10. Melvin Stephenson DB S. Grand Prairie (88)
11. Adam James Ath Celina (96) Legacy

I don't know for sure, but I believe we've offered Justin Jordan, Andrew Novak, Greg Rideaux, Soloman Orr, Kendall Briscoe and Melvin Stephenson. We've offered Burley, and he'd like to come to SMU, but he wants to stay at WR (where he has offers from Oklahoma, Iowa, etc.), but the rumor is that we want him to grow into a TE. And, for the record, the 4.6 or 4.7 or whatever time is listed out there is slow -- he has run a 4.5 on many occasions.

The last report on Stephenson was about 40 days ago-SMU hadn't offered at that-4 other schools were mentioned more prominently perhaps because of that. No info on Briscoe or Solomon Orr for about 5 months-so who knows-but the DMN took that info from dated info on Rivals. We could probably get Novak but he lists the most interest in Louisiana Tech perhaps because we haven't offered. Adam James is probably a Baseball prospect and has had little interest from Division 1A Football program. Somehow he fanagled an invitation to the U.S. Army All-American game though. Rideax is a great athlete who is a football project-only 13 catches in Plano's running offense. Indications in early December had Justin Jourdan with interest in SMU and TCU but he is a virtual unkown in recruiting circles-I'd love to get him though because with his decent size he could play any number of positions. Again, his Rivals highlite real is outstanding with about 15-16 home-run big plays on it. Very little confirmed information on the internet though about interest, visits and offers which makes you wonder whether there is an academic issue. Jordan Shoemaker is a very real possibility in the offensive line. Jake Behnig is undersized for Division 1A and measured 6.05, 188 during the summer with no recruiting updates in 5 months. No recruiting info on Brandon Thermilus in 5 months-no offers at that time. Of that group Stephenson is the highest rated at 5.4, Briscoe, Shoemaker and Novak are rated 5.3 and the rest have not even been rated at all by Rivals. Jordan and Rideax are getting some looks though. The others are just about completely off the recruiting radar.

Anyone know a good source to check rankings for this year's juniors? Rivals and Scout-at least from the free stuff I can see-look like only info for the class of '06 is listed. Besides the all-world Bradley Stephens (a junior recruited and offered by every BigXII, SEC, and other D1 teams except for SMU), there was a first team all state DE down here...don't know if he projects anywhere. I think his name is Nunez...decent size for a Junior; no idea about times, weights, etc.

I haven't heard a peep about Shoemaker. Personally, I'd still like to see Mark Terry or Orr or the big kid from Mansfield, but only because I know they're huge. I don't know anything about Shoemaker, so maybe he's huge, too. If that's the case, I'll take him if he's the best player. I want at least one more -- preferably two more -- big uglies up front.

CB Melvin Stephenson committed to UTEP today so he could go to school in a desolete wasteland where English is a second language. Still no peep from a quality Metroplex recruit strongly considering SMU.

it is getting discouraging. I'm not down on Bennett, but it does beg the question how Tulsa is horse kicking us in recruiting all over the place, year over year now.

Tulsa is not the only school whipping SMU in recruiting. Aside from the Big 12 teams, TCU, UTEP, Houston, and N. Texas are getting better players than SMU. This admission thing going on at SMU is absolutely destroying any chance SMU has to compete with these schools. Sure, many will counter with the whoping 5 wins this year but it still ain't a winning season and it still ain't a bowl game. I am sure Bennett has lost a lot of players due to the admisison office not accepting credits or janking a player around on his credits. It is happening now and it has happened for the last fifteen years. Remember, SMU is a bad team and has accomplished absolutely zero in the last twenty years for a reason. It ain't by accident.

Really? What do you know, other than height, weight, 40 time (and the reports of this info range pretty widely, so who knows how accurate it is) about Hurst, Holmes, Rhoades, Gonzalez and Sowe (if he's an actual commitment)? Nothing -- same as the rest of us. Trust the coaches to identify the talent. They've done it before, and they're in a better recruiting position than they have since they got here. These guys watch the tapes, talk to the HS coaches, and they know what they're doing.

give it a rest, BJ.

You do not know what you are talking about with regards to admissions at SMU :!:

Our big weekends are Jan 6 and Jan 13. SMU does not recruit off anyone's list. Coach Bennett and his staff have proven themselves as really good talent evaluators as our footbal team has adn is showing steady progress because of their hard work in their evaluations.

More BS from a sunshiner. Billy Joe isn't the only one sick of the slow progress and the sunshine reports that things are getting better. We have been putting up with "steady progress" for the past 18 years.Maybe we should try recruiting from someone else's list.

We are really making great progress. I would like to have some progress like TCU, Tulsa, and UTEP. Because of the spin that comes from people like Stampede, nothing is ever done to make us instantly competetive like UTEP and Tulsa. Try this progress out- TAM 66 SMU 8. Spin that one!

Look there is no secret recruiting list for 90% of the players in this state. You don't think Phil knows about just about every single prospect in the Metroplex which he calls a goldmine. We are getting SHUTOUT in the Metroplex. Now when you strike out on the first 300 or so then Phil might need his "secret list" which tells you everything you need to know about SMU's recruiting year. We are getting humiliated ESPECIALLY in the Metroplex.

Let the sunshiners rant! Phil Bennett is right in that SMU is right in the middle of one of the best recruiting areas in the nation. However, it don't mean a darn thing if you cannot get any. The numbers do not lie folks. Bennett is whiffing on every single local kid he has targeted. You better hope Bennett finds a way to sneak in a juco qb in here that has had some sort of success post-high school. I do not like the prospect of starting a red-shirt freshman (not named Manning or Vick) who has taken zero snaps at the college level. It is Phil's own fault for the heat he is taking because he was spouting off about getting in more juco's and telling everyone things are improving recruiting wise. Hey Phil, here is some wisdom for you...do not write checks your rear cannot cash. Questions Phil: how many top state and area recruits do you have verbals from per the Rivals list printed in the DMN? How many local recruits have chosen Tulsa over SMU that were offered by both schools? How many DISD players do you have verbals from? Answers those at your next cupcakes and coffee meeting. But wait, our big recruiting weekends are in January....please.
