Spring Game recap: RBs stand out

I am most worried about Malone at dc. He seems a little too cool for school to me. The rest of the guys I have faith in. We got alphonso and kevin thomas, proche, honey, sutton, gaines, and the other rbs. I think we're good there as long as we get decent qb play. Defense scares the crap out of me

When Morris made the decision to get rid of Mason's defense and switch to the 4-2-5, he made our talent hole on defense deeper. ( BTW - I am not criticizing the decision. In the long run, it was probably a smart move. In the short run, it made the rebuild a little more painful).

For three main reasons, the defense is at least a year behind the offense:
1) June's poor recruiting in general;
2) Guys like Jarvis Pruitt, who is one of the better upperclassmen on defense, isn't an ideal fit in the 4-2-5; and
3) We are limited to 25 new scholarship players per year and the 2015 class was heavily tilted towards offense.

Hopefully, they hit home runs on the 2016 recruits for the defense. We are going to need them.

The upcoming season is still going to be a struggle like last year. But that's what happens when you're digging out of a huge hole.
I'm looking forward to seeing what players this season step up and make a difference. Honey and Thomas will be two I keep my eye on after Saturday. Hopefully there will be others that make a mark in the fall.
But yes, the play of the QBs on Saturday was awful and has me hoping Davis can stay healthy all season. The quality of throws in a glorified scrimmage was stunningly bad.

Even if Davis stays healthy, and is deemed the starter, Morris is going to have to tweak/tailor the offense to better fit his skill set, because the quality of his throws are stunningly bad as well. The only thing he really did last year with his arm was throw bombs up for grabs to Sutton in the first half of the year. Once teams figured that out after the first 4 games, Sutton's numbers really dropped off, with the exception of the Tulsa game.

Sutton is great, and the receiving corp is a strength, can Morris figure out a way to maximize this strength without an accurate QB?

BIG "if" on the staying healthy part...part of the problem last year was a failure to adapt by the staff to the talent (or lack thereof) relating to the scheme on offense and defense. Davis was having issues the entire season with pressure literally from the snap, much less from the pocket. That combined with no time for secondary routes led to a poorer performance. O-line must make a significant step up, as does the running game, in order to mask some of the deficiencies.

some of you must of forgotten how bad the offense was in 2014 when we came into the season with zero offensive threats. 2015 Offense was a huge improvement-and 2016 Offense will be much better than 2015

Nobody has forgotten. It's interesting you think the 2016 offense will be much better than 2015 with Davis, Colbert, and Hicks as the top 3 QB's, 2 of which you've hated and criticized since day 1.

Actually an argument could be made that statistically, a lot of that 'offensive improvement' was a direct of result of having one of the worst offenses in college history in 2014. Of course the statistical numbers are going to show great improvement. What some people observed, was a seeming lack of creativity, or unwillingness to adapt as the season progressed, given what they learned early in the season.

There were certainly signs of improvement, and more talent at the RB & WR positions. The OLine should be improved as well with an additional year in the system. QB is the obvious problem with this offense really taking that next step, and Morris knows it full well. Is the guru going to adapt, or is he just going to wait another year or 2 and hope a QB savior appears?

My prediction has very little to do with QB and has everything to do with the arsenal we are assembling at the skill positions. If Davis remains healthy SMU will approach 500 yards per game total offense. As for Colbert I've said since I saw him 3 times in high school that he would never be a starter on a bowl caliber SMU team in his career. He won't. He's a Division 1A athlete-but not a QB
