And that includes 25 years of exile.
Re: SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100Notice in the write up that one of the ranking periods started in 1989. I would say we stumbled out of the blocks that year.

Actually 30 years of exile....and counting. In 1986, our last season pre-DP, SMU went 6-5. We were 3-1 against current B12 South opponents, our only loss being @UT (27-24 final score). Over the next 30 years, our record against B12 South opponents has been 0-52-1.

Huge comeback in that game too after being down big we so could have won it! 1986 was a strange year for sure with some crazy results. The 41-0 at the end to Arky was kind of expected since by then there was already the feeling of what might be coming. The 30-0 at the scum devils is still baffling though. An object at rest cannot be stopped!
Re: SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100
Yeah there were some strange trips to Arizona around that time with the 28-6 loss in Tucson in 1985 as well when we were ranked #3. Shake It Off Moody
Re: SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100A little nearsighted towards teams of recent success because of the increased length of the season and therefore more polls.
Re: SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100
I've been following SMU for ages. That late-season victory in Lubbock, securing a winning season as the proverbial crapola was about to hit the fan, was one of the prouder moments for me personally. Of course the next week they did collapse against Arkansas, but as you say, that was not unexpected. Believe the Sun Devil fans threw paper money at our players, and that was an early season game, so yes, by season-end they knew what was coming.
SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100Ranked even higher in the Scout version using the AP data without extra tampering. Also funny when you realize the AAC loud mouths from the east are all ranked lower on that list than 4-5 teams from the 40's from military training commands. If you go all the way down, Memphis has...1 point.

Re: SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100Remember sitting second row,45 yard line, east side (these were folding chairs) for Notre Dame game 11/8/86. We went up 21-zip in the first half, and a fat blue hair ND fan seating next to me started moaning about how her Irish were going to lose. I pointed out to her to look at our ponies (bench was 30 feet in front of us). They were starring aimlessly into space and not into this game in a fabled stadium and opponent. I informed her that the team knew we were to be hit with a major penalty by the NCAA. She had no idea what I was talking about. We lost this game 61-29.

The team stayed up a little late the night before.
Re: SMU #55 in AP All-time Top 100
Yeah. The Hansen report was just before the Tech game and you could tell the team rallied around itself, but by the next week against Arkansas I think everybody knew it was over. Shake It Off Moody
