Sutton, Lawler Named To AAC Weekly Honor Roll
Lawler scores three touchdowns, Lawler collects 3.5 sacks

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AAC/SMU) – SMU sophomore Courtland Sutton and junior Justin Lawler were named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday.

The duo helped lead the Mustangs to a 34-21 victory Saturday at North Texas to win its first season opener since 2009. It was SMU's first road win to open the season since 1986.

Sutton had four catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns, including a career-long 88-yard TD reception, the fifth-longest pass play in SMU history. The Brenham, Texas, native was named to the preseason 2016 Biletnikoff Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List after a stellar freshman campaign where he was named to the USA Today Sports Freshman All-America Team.

Lawler notched a career-high 3.5 sacks, just half-sack off the school record and recorded a team-high eight tackles. The Pottsboro, Texas, native leads the country in sacks this season after week one and now has 7.5 sacks in his career. Lawler was named to Dave Campbell's 2016 All-Texas College Team and the Athlon Sports and Phil Steele All-AAC preseason squads.

SMU is back on the road next week when the Mustangs travel to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised on FS1. The Mustangs' home opener is scheduled for Sept. 17 against Liberty. Season tickets are still available for as little as $99 for SMU's six-game home slate.
