Re: OFFICIAL GAME 2 THREAD: SMU vs. BaylorA couple of interesting things to watch:
QB: assuming MD is not going to play, can HIcks make quick decisions? We won't have time in the pocket, so pre-snap does it look like Sutton is doubled? If not, what about Proche/Castille? Otherwise you should choose between Gaines and 22. After the snap, take a look at what you read and if it isn't there, dump it off or take off. Quick. The interior OL. The tackles are what they are, and will struggle this game. Sure, Baylor is young on the d line, but they are still good. Our big yards rushing came behind LG against NT. Can Brown, McCarty, and Saenna win battles in this game? If they win in this game, it bodes really well the rest of the season. DE: We played without the number 3 and number 4 guys last weekend (M Scott and Pruitt). Lawler still had 3.5 sacks. How do we stand up against the best OL we will face this year? Can we get pressure and protect the edge? Again, if we can push the pocket this game, we are going to look really good in conference. Badejo did absolutely nothing in practice the first two or three weeks of fall camp and looked like a definite redshirt. Then he shows up in the game and makes plays, indicating he is growing up fast. Who steps up opposite Lawler between M Scott, Badejo, and Gary? DT: We played without our best tackle (Gentry) for most of the NT game. But still managed a push in the middle. Again, can we hold up against the best OL we face this season? If we hold the line in this game, we will excel the rest of the season. We know we are going to struggle at LB, and we know we are fine at RB, WR, and in the secondary. The stuff above will determine whether we end up with 3 or 4 wins or 6+.
Re: OFFICIAL GAME 2 THREAD: SMU vs. BaylorIf Gentry is our best DT then we are in trouble. Nothing against him but I just think we have a lot of decent players at that position which is not bad and our best potential is being reshirted. Also, I think most knew Badejo's potential (he was doing well in practice) as well as Gary. No one really knows about our secondary at this point so to say we are fine is a bit premature. Baylor will tell a lot. Hope to see the freshman and redshirt freshmen get more playing time because they will be what makes this team really go next year. So to give them experience this year would be smart. Just like USF did during Taggart's second year. The key will be QB and how he spreads the ball around. If the QB spreads the ball around the Baylor will not be able to key on just one or two receivers. I was never really a fan of the OSU 4-2-5 that we run and really liked the TCU 4-2-5 better but we will see how it does against Baylor.

Re: OFFICIAL GAME 2 THREAD: SMU vs. BaylorThe badejo thing isn't just my opinion. Sure I thought he struggled at the practices I saw but I had coaches and players tell me that he wasn't making an impact through the first couple of weeks. The fact that he actually played and made an impact is indicative of the massive strides he must have made in the last week or so. Hopefully that upward trajectory continues!
Right now, gentry is absolutely our best defensive tackle. Watch the interior pocket buckle in the few plays he got against by. Love the potential of the newbies and biggers. Biggers in particular made huge improvements from spring camp. Right now with him it is more mental -play within the scheme instead of doing your own thing. So much more depth at dt than we have had in forever. The play of that dl is imperative for us covering for linebacker. If they show well against Baylor I think the defense will actually be "average" when we get to conference play. The reason I make the comment about the secondary is that in practice the secondary holds their own against our wr Corp. which we all think is pretty salty. Sure Baylor is probably the best wr crew we will see this year and I expect them to struggle. But seeing them against our wr which are amongst the best in conference tells me they are going to be fine. The dl looks good in practice but everyone knows the ol isn't great. So we want to judge them against top competition.
Re: OFFICIAL GAME 2 THREAD: SMU vs. BaylorI had heard different about Badejo because I had asked if he would reshirt and was told definitely not. And we see why. When I made the comment a Gentry I was referring to it as a whole not just watching how he did against a very bad UNT team. Saying he is the best at SMU is not saying much at this time. Gentry is about a CUSA or Sunbelt mid level DT. So he is not a world beater. Nothing spectacular but okay and serviceable. The freshman that will redshirt this year will be better than Gentry. The key for today will be how our secondary performs, if of course they can get pressure on the QB. Another issue will be trying to survive while HCCM recruits better offensive lineman to replace the June Jones recruits. I know your practice and player report predictions have been way off the past few years but I think this game will be a good indicator of where we are. And regardless of how our secondary does in practice against players that they are accustomed to seeing everyday and an offense where they see the plays all the time means very little. The secondary will be more of the telling tale than the LB's imo. I think we will start to see more of Onu and C. Davis. We'll see as the season goes along. Beat Baylor.
