Punter !!!

Postby Pony in SA » Sat Sep 10, 2016 6:21 pm

Recruit a punter who can kick the ball more than 35 yards please, and stop this rugby crap. HIgh school kids I watched last night kick it higher with more distance.

Kids did a lot of good things today, but punting not one of them at all.

Special teams were not good. Kick off returns especially.

I personally have no problem with the rugby style if done effectively. We were spoiled with Morestead.

Morestead was special NFL quality punter. Since then we have not had a high school quality punter. The kicking game might be our biggest weakness.

I hate the rugby style kicking, too, because it's so damn ugly. But honestly, if done right, it can be extremely effective, helping to limit if not even nullify returns because the returner stays away from a bouncing kick.

Having said that, what we have rolled out ther so far this season is not effective.

Punting has changed forever. Its no longer pretty. Its about not allowing return yardage now-and it makes sense. Rugby punters are invading College Football. A 35 yard punt with no return is a positive. That's better than punting to Kevante Turpin

Exactly. Why anyone kicks to guys like that I'll never know.

If done well, the rugby style is not returned as effectively as is the style we are use to. That is particularly important against a good team like Baylor. Expect to see the punter run for first downs a few times too. We were spoiled by Morestead. I imagine if we get another like Morestead we will go back to the old style.

The Arkansas punter is NFL quality. Did an excellent job of directional punting while averaging over 50 yards.

Although I do not have the stats, my recollection of the announced punt distances had most of our punts all over 40 yards and most were out of bounds and not returnable. I thought the punting was just fine and did not hurt us. We must remember this was a frosh kicker who was kicking in his first football game. Hence, I would expect him to be more effective as the season goes on as he gets a better feel of the time he has to kick and where he needs to place the ball.

Much better than 50 yarder followed by a 12 yarder.
