Kevin Johnson is a sure handed tackler at Safety. Millines was outstanding although he was fatigued in 4th Q and had guys run past him twice when the game was over

Thoughts on the game

Postby PonySnob » Sat Sep 10, 2016 10:34 pm

We need to spend some time practicing our kickoff returns! Seemed like total confusion on numerous kicks received 1-2 yards in the end zone including the time our returner stepped over the goal line and didn't seem to realize it.

....yeah but what was really bad is I'm not sure SMU Kickoff team laid a hat on a single Baylor defender all day in the wedge. Those guys were running around and not hittin' anyone.

Unmentioned Factor in Baylor Victory:

McLane Stadium may have been worth about 14 points today. They have arranged that Stadium perfectly so the Home Team is in the shade for most of the game while the visiting team was in the Sun the entire game. Bet it was 10-12 degrees cooler for Baylor today. I have no doubt it was a major factor today. I'm wondering if hunch is right

also just about every seat on home side was filled even late in the game while visitor side cleared out early

A redshirt freshman. So he has been in the system for a year. By the way, who else should we count on that is on the team?

That was a joke.

Most stadiums have the home field advantage during day games you speak of. We do, UT does ect.

Put the visitors in the sun and see if you can wear them out.

But McLane is a wonderful stadium and I thought it was well proportioned for the size of the BU ( or any private school not named Notre Dame or USC). Big enough to accommodate the home team fans but not too big where the opposition can bring a bunch of fans.

BU did a good job with McLane. Plus the downtown parking shuttle arrangement worked very well.

staidum is fine - but i actually thought it was cheap on the outside and inside. Not as nice as i thought it would be. Cool to be on the river, but other than that pretty ordinary. Feel like it got value engineered at the end and they took off anything nice.

Getting in the stadium was a complete whipping. Stood in line for over half hour to get through security. What is the deal with that? worst i have ever seen.

I wouldn't complain about the security getting into the stadium. The University of Oklahoma and all other big programs have long security lines like that.

Kudos to Baylor for a nice stadium. Much like their churches, they built a big, nice stadium that people from the suburbs will find attractive.

I expected to lose this game, so I'm not surprised (necessarily) about that. I'm just disappointed on how we lost. We beat ourselves more than them taking it to us. We are young, and we were down our starting QB and RB, so I get that it happens. I just am ready for us to will ourselves to win games like this where the other team is just laying out opportunities for us to take home the win.

As others have mentioned, the defense was a surprise. They are a lot better than I thought they'd be. I think if they keep playing like that, they could keep us in games this year.

Proche is a nice compliment to Sutton, and I think we are finally syptartong to see depth at WR and RB. We get even semi-consistent play out of whatever QB can go this year, we might surprise ourselves.

I was impressed by how much we had improved over last week. We cut our mistakes by quite a bit. However, most of the ones we made were at critical times. Our defense was much stronger in all areas than I would have imagined; as was our offensive line. However, one of the problems we had was keeping the bears away from our QB. We played our 2nd string qb against a top rated team out of a major conference. As Stallion wrote Hicks often released the ball before he got in to much trouble. I question how many times Davis would have been sacked. None of Hicks interceptions would have happened against UNT. (Baylor has good players.) Though we seemed worn down by the end of the game, SMU has more depth than last year and we can reach 6 wins this year. I want Matt back, but Hicks learned some big lessons today and he will improve because of this day.

I was very impressed with their stadium. Love the open concourse with a view of the field and it feels much bigger than it is. Only holds 13,000 more than Ford but looks much larger to me.

They used the same architects as the Dallas Cowboys and TCU. Essentially it's a mini copy of Jerryworld.

Is it just me or does it still seem as if we are only using about 30% of our offense. We have seen glimpses in the last 2 years of different formations, more tight end use, swing passes to RBs, etc. I am thinking Morris is still very slowly growing the offense and we have much more to look forward to in the future, but I would think by now the kids should be knowledgeable of most of the playbook.

It comes to mind that ND visited many years ago, for a game played in the Cotton Bowl, and requested/received dispensation for their bench to be on the same side as ours.
