Because the backup (new recruit) is unknown and thus dory out flaws. Brewer might be a great prospect, but true freshmen qb's rarely thrive. If they win the job, great. But, needing them to win the job is a recipe for failure. Next year, we will have legit QB depth with Hicks, Arky Boy and Brewer fighting for the starting job. Hopefully, Hicks/Peavey win the job allowing guys like Brewer to seriously compete for PT as a Sophomore.
Hopefully the best QB wins no matter who it is.

Kid is kicking [deleted] in 6A, scoring like crazy and making plays against tough competition. Him and Cade Brewer will be huge at SMU. That's party why. I hope he signs early and we can get him on campus ASAP.

Brewer here in January, done deal. Needs to put some weight on though to withstand the rigors of college football.

I watched the Baylor game thinking that Hicks showed a lot of good things as a redshirt frosh making his first start vs on the road at a ranked Baylor team (in his hometown, no less). He of course made the same mistakes that most young QB's make.
My thought was if we had an experienced, good QB like Garret Gilbert, we win that game with the way we played on both sides of the ball. You take those red zone INTs away, or at least score TDs instead of FGs, and we win.
Not taking anything away from Hicks, but he is young and inexperienced. He will improve his decision-making if we let him play. With Davis, we pretty much know what we have - a scrambling, mobile QB who bails from the pocket too quickly at times.

I'll say it again: Use Davis between the 20s and the goal line, both ends of the field; use Hicks to get us down there, between the 20s. Texas is doing a version of that with their 2 QBs.

Could we call it the 4 wheel drive? It will be our version of the 18 wheeler.

Whatever happens Hicks needs to keep his chin up. He played well given the circumstances and his first pass game 1 was a TD. He's got potential and we shouldn't give up on him at all. As long as he learns from his mistakes, it's all good. We aren't going to be world beaters this year. However next year, if he wins the starting position I expect more judicious decisions in the red zone from him.

People really think Matt Davis will play again this season?

yeah I've learned that Chad Morris isn't going to show his hand on injuries. Xavier's not playing because of "cramps" (as opposed to hamstring) should be a hint

It's SMU. Wouldn't we call it the BMW or maybe the Range Rover?

Bill Clinton trademarked that several years ago.
