I have reached the point of acceptance that we will not enter the P5 during this possible round of B12 expansion. And I don't see any further movement unless and until the B12 GOR expires in 2024, when most likely UT and OU bolt.

At that point, we are probably a lock for the 'best of the rest' leftovers which will effectively merge the B12 with the AAC and a few MWC programs.

History has shown that we only enter a conference once TCU leaves. The same will likely hold true here.

I don't think that SMU is high on their list but there is a STRONG argument that the PAC12 must expand into the Central Time Zone. They are simply ignored by half the Country. And UT will never go to the PAC by themselves-they want to be the kingpin in TEXAS for a Texas presence in recruiting Texans and would insist on a quadrant of teams to join them. I really don't think UT wants to go anywhere. Notice they are never the one to leave or the first to threaten to leave. But they may need to in the future. Right now there really is not reason they have to-they are raking in the cash

PAC12 expansion has the potential to create new markets and media attention with a Central Time Zone scenario. Add strong academics and regular FB and BB visits to Texas' biggest media markets and recruiting grounds, Dallas and Houston, reveals a Rice and SMU combo as uniquely appealing. Both schools would instantly draw bigger crowds, when hosting USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Arizona schools, etc. It's fun to think of this possibility, even it is remote.

As for Big XII, my hope is they defer expansion at this time to buy some time to reestablish our brand. ACC sounds as if the state of Texas is not of interest. So, "Go West, Young Man", Horace Greeley.

Well, 1st. On the mileage stuff. I honestly did check the mileage to UCONN, So. Fla., UCF, E. Carolina, Cinn. stuff. Not much different than CO, ASU, UA, UCLA, USC mileage. $25-30 Million should fix that. SMU would be in the PAC south.
When the PAC last expanded, they took Utah & CO. CO was dying to get away from UT. As were MO, ATM, Neb. BYU would have been the best $ option. But they took Utah from the MWC or WAC. They did not want the BYU baggage. This is the same with UT. Schools left the B12 because of UT. The PAC is fine with all the members right now. So why bring this thing into the PAC. They won't. I'm sure many of the top PAC people remember the egg on their faces over the UT mess. They do not want to go through that again. So except for a minor mileage thing, SMU's people need to be talking to the PAC. They might be?

In the age of jet travel, mileage is not as critical as airport access. For example, existing B12 schools (in particular K State and WVU) are enormous PITA to fly into. They aren't going to add another school with a WVU travel situation.

Haven't seen any recent news, but here's my two cents: UT will never ever be in a conference with SMU unless they are required to by a court or congressional action. SMU will need to rip off some undefeated football seasons a la TCU (and start regularly selling out Ford Stadium) before there's any chance that a playoff conference would try to invite them. That's unlikely to happen given the current environment SMU finds itself in. I hope I'm wrong.

Ultimately I think there will be further consolidation of conferences and further exclusion of some schools like SMU from the big money in college football. SMU will have to make some serious changes to weather that storm.
