Old fart question

Postby mrydel » Sun Sep 18, 2016 11:55 am

When I played we shuttled players in and out for play calling. On defense I always called the front seven and a secondary player called theirs. I would like someone who knows, not just speculation, what the meaning of the picture cards are on the sideline. Most teams use them now. Pictures are different for different teams, but they have to indicate formations I assume. Can anyone detail this in a way that even I would understand?

On defense, I believe the cards merely shield the coaches' hand signals from prying eyes from the press box. On offense, they may relate to formation.

And you're not so old.

Thanks "old" buddy. Never thought about the shielding aspect. That makes sense.

I too cannot make a reasonable explanation of the picture cards, but it seems to be the way the majority of schools - HS and college - use now.

As to the "shielding". Anyone else notice how Liberty used some type of fabric on PVC to shield, but the only thing they were shielding was the two end zones. They ran almost parallel to the yard lines ...

The pictures mean different things in different situations. Craddock and Morris are actually transitioning away from the pictures and to a simpler signaling method.

Thanks. That explains why every time I see the Whataburger sign I run out and get one.

I would think with Meadows and the DeGoyler Collection being so close; and the upscale reputation this school has, we should be using some the paintings on our sidelines to call formations.
