THoughts on the game

Postby JasonB » Sun Sep 18, 2016 10:56 am

I decided to create a thread because someone said we didn't need one in the game thread ;).

I agree with Stallion - Hicks was much better tonight. People are complaining about the final score, but we put up almost 500 on offense. Without our starting RB, a QB making his first home start, and Sutton was in and out of the game and obviously not 100%.

That said, until he gets more consistency, his new nickname is "Scud".

Throws down the seam that he steps into are accurate.

Any throws with touch, he has mechanical issues and either lofts it or underthrows it. He lofted a play to the corner that allowed the DB to recover and make a play, and underthrew Sutton in the endzone.

When he throws to the sideline, he throws too hard if it isn't just a WR screen and the throws are all over the place.

He is much more accurate on the rollout, I expect we will see that a lot more frequently. Very impressive accuracy actually on those plays.

Sutton was injured and a decoy most of the night, but interesting they moved him around all over the place. Good adjustment by the staff to keep him from consistent and easy doubles. Lots of plays out of the slot and even came out of the backfield once.

We don't have any linemen who consistently "win". So the running game is inconsistent. In the redzone we can't run at all because Liberty absolutely loaded the box and no linemen dominate. Hicks is going to have to make a play in the redzone eventually. I expect the fade to Sutton and Honey to be used extensively the rest of the season, and even Colbert sightings in the redzone.

Defensively, the team is much better than expected. Secondary is awesome. Defensive line is great as well - Liberty's throws were two second throws because they didn't have any time to do anything else. When they got in long situations and tried to let the pass develop, they were pressured and sacked. When Liberty ran the ball successfully, they were hit in the backfield and we just didn't make the tackle. But we were there to make the play and it only happened late in the game when we were tired. After the first drive through most of the 3rd quarter the defense really shut Liberty down.

Linebackers need a lot of work still. When you seen the 3rd and long and screens make a first down, they are taking advantage of a lot of space on the field and a lack of speed at LB to make a play. Alos take note of the option plays - when they ran it, the DE (Badejo a couple of times) was right there and took out his player - the QB. But there was no linebacker in sight to take the RB and tackles were made way downfield.

Speaking of Badejo, great to see the progress. Was told by a lot of people and watched a couple of practices the first two weeks of fall and everyone said he was invisible. His progression is tremendous. He started tonight and made plays. Will be exciting to see his continued growth as the season moves along.

Liberty isn't bad - they gave VT a tough game in the opener. They will probably be a playoff team at their level this year. The score wasn't great, but converting drives would have made this a blowout early. And we had a ton of calls go against us that helped Liberty out as well. The potential is there, the QB isn't ready yet. I still have us at 5 or 6 wins with marked improvement as the season goes along and we close the season with a lot of easier games. Everyone should just have some fun this year watching the progress of the team.

Next year, watch out. 3 QBs competing for the job, one will be ready to go. Loaded at WR and RB. New OL will be ready to go. DL and secondary will still be good and LBs will be ready.

Covering on the pitch man on the option was nonexistent. You are right, no LB even close to the play.

Jason: Great stuff, as always. I share your optimism. Our defence is vastly improved, they compete on every play.

Don't think Sutton was hurt. I believe they were just trying to rotate in players that deserve to play and have had good practices at wr. Nothing wrong with that. In fact it is good foe recruiting to know that there is a good rotation at wr. And I just making it to a couple of practices and judging Badejo was not fair. I was told he was doing well all along and no way he would redshirt. I guess they were right in what they told me. And while this team was a decent FCS team the rest of the teams were play will be better than them. Don't think Tulane nor Tulsa will be cake walk automatic wins, SMU is going to have to play well to win those games imo.

Virginia Tech beat them by just 36-13. We could have beaten them much worse.

I was wondering where you were. How have you been doing? But anyway glad they had that TD called back that would have given them the lead in the 4th quarter.

Virginia Tech could have also beaten them much worse (they lost four fumbles). The difference is Virginia Tech got a 20 point lead early in the second half and never let it go.

Almost all of the players on FCS rosters weren't "big enough" or "fast enough" to attract much attention from FBS schools. But a lot of them are simply very good football players, which may explain why North Dakota State beat Iowa.

North Dakota State makes a yearly pilgrimage to Frisco for the FCS Championship and they completely take over the town. They have a great fanbase.

ND State folks are what any school should strive to have as fans. They travel great, have a great time and are pretty knowledgeable. It cracks me up when I run into folks in the [deleted] end of ND and their first statement when they learn I live in Texas is "do you know Frisco?"

A couple of thoughts...

First, my sincere thanks to Mark and Chris for their generosity in offering the tickets. It was something that I will not forget.

-Our Special Teams- aren't...they almost cost us this game, and will cost us one later. This is an area that deserves critical attention.

-Our defense is light-years better than last year. It still has light-years to go. We will get there, eventually.

-Our O-line had a miserable time Saturday. This is another critical area. Hicks will only survive if they get better. I am not confident Hicks will survive.

-I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd...met some folks I hadn't seen in several years, and had a few of the "head nod" greetings from people you recognize but cannot place. My two friends from Liberty were absolutely amazed at the Boulevard. I was too. It has grown into a first-rate pregame event.

Lastly, the process of parking and entry/egress from our campus is SO much better than before, and so many other venues...I know it is partly a numbers game, but there weren't the idiot moves of blocking off streets for the sake of a few at the cost of the many. It is always a treat to come to a game, and this was no exception....and oh, by the way, the Liberty fans had to wear SMU shirts this morning in church...WIN!

I'm not sure who your sources are, but I can tell you I was told first hand by a couple of coaches, multiple players, and a SMU football living legend who was out at practice a lot that Badejo wasn't doing anything the first two weeks. Is it possible that folks planted that information in me to deceive the public and happened to watch Badejo on his off days? I guess so, but I doubt it.

Rotating the receivers is great. No argument there. And moving him around the field is great as well. But I watched him have difficulty running routes against the Liberty corners, and got very little separation most of the time. Maybe the Liberty corners are that good. Or maybe he was banged up a bit. They rotated him out on the very first drive of the game, that is another sign. No fade calls at the goalline. And finally for a lot of the game, he was coming in on third and long and that was it. He is our best blocking receiver, and if he was healthy I think we would see him on the field on first and second down on his designated drives. Maybe your right - there is nothing wrong with him. But watching him used sparingly yesterday and also him being used sparingly at the Baylor game after he hurt himself made me think otherwise...
