Freeman's high school coach said Freeman had as good a throwing arm as Ryan Mallett (see PonyPride's Recruiting Roundup for details).

That alone doesn't make him a Division I starting quarterback, and it's probably not even true, but it tells me his arm is stronger than Hicks' arm anyway!

SMUer

You obviously don't understand the concept of Morris' offense. The Boundary receiver is usually designed to get one-on-one opportunities to a taller WR hopefully able to out-jump an undersized CB. Courtland Sutton is utilized usually as the sole receiver on his side of the field with 2 other receivers to the Field side. If the Defense puts a second man on the Boundary receiver then that opens up opportunities for other receiver. Yes the offense is designed as a run first offense (don't have OLine for RBs for that right now). We ain't running the Run-and Shoot. The long ball (sometimes jump ball) to the Boundary Receiver will always be a big part of the Offense. Its often a mismatch against smaller DBs

And Hicks has hit on about 55% of his passes in last 2 weeks-your 30% number is wrong because a bunch of incompletions were long balls. He's actually hit a good percentage of his intermediate routes. He got the ball to Proche and Sutton 10 times last nite in intermediate routes-not too bad and they were pretty productive with about 180 yards in receptions

Here is a diagram and description of the various receiver positions from Morris' offense at Clemson. Note the 3 Receiver is usually the TE and not in the slot as the diagram suggests. ("In practice, the 3 is usually a tight end that can split out in the slot or line up in the backfield. The 9 is the boundary receiver"). The Boundary receiver is usually the only receiver to his side of the field so Defenses have to make adjustments to help in coverage. Then read about Mike Williams who is Clemson's 6-4 version of Courtland Sutton. Same skill set-same concept of mismatch of a taller receiver with ball skills in the air. Long ball to the Boundary Receiver

So we should start a true freshman who had zero D-1 offers to play QB? I know the highlights look good but It doesn't mean he can play in college. I think throwing him in for several plays in wildcat would be a good first step and let him try slinging it a few times.

Are you going to give him the same short leash you gave Hicks?

It's not about his mental game which can change. It's about his arm and mechanics. That's not going to change before this season so we have seen what we need to see

Well I don't think anyone wants him to start next week. I think most of us are just saying what you are..let's start to see it to explore options. Even if hicks overall numbers aren't god awful sometimes his impressive throws are usually after several poor ones. No consistency

You guys do realize we did run Freemon in the Wild Mustang for some plays don't you? It looked pretty good down on the goal line but we got a penalty. In the open field, not so much. I am sure they have more plays developed and we will see it more as the season progresses.

yeah we ran it several times last nite with Freeman at QB-its not designed to be used much more than that. I'm sure we'll see it some more since it almost resulted in a TD

Well he was 9 of 23 (<50%) and as you said, only could hit intermediary routes and "boundary receiver" passes, so actually my "<30% on all other passes" doesn't sound so far off now does it?

He was 19 for 35 and 244 yards 54% last nite

19 for 32 last week (almost 60%)

Even with disastrous 2nd Half of Baylor game he is hitting 50% on the year

http://www.espn.com/college-football/pl ... /ben-hicks

Matt Davis threw for 48% or less in 5 of his last 7 starts

Using Freeman in red zone is a nice option/change that keeps a defense off balance...and any time the ball is on the left hash there is more opportunity for him to throw rolling right. I like Freeman but agree that Hicks has to be given more time. He may not be the most accurate passer, but there were several balls that were really close so I will remain hopeful he connects on more of those as we face lesser competition

Well ESPN says he was 9/23 for 244yds vs TCU...so if I'm wrong, I apologize. I would assume they'd have the stats since it was on their network.

Update: I am an idiot 9/23 was the date not his completion rate. I'll just walk away from my keyboard now.
