Stallion wrote:There is no reason to question the Model Chad Morris is using to turn this program around.. Its been excellent so far.. Recruiting competitive recruiting classes off 1 and 2 win teams.. Had some tough breaks losing our starting QB and RB-perhaps both for the season-the only thing that matters from a long term perspective are those 27 true, medical, redshirt freshman and first year transfers already playing plus the kids redshirting this year. That is the nucleus of the turn-around. I understand that some don't want to wait until next year for the party but that is what Morris' Model is about. Otherwise, he would have brought in those 20 JUCOs in his first two classes. Don't need that here at SMU-it fails far more often that the traditional Model Morris has decided to use. Only JUCOs SMU will sign under Morris will be the emergency recruit to plug holes in the roster. I'd rather plug with Division 1-A transfers any way which I expect to see more of as players who Morris previously recruited transfer from other schools. This is a 3-4-5 year rebuilding process because of the lack of talent left by June Jones-and Morris thankfully did not try to take a short-cut
Stallion is 100% correct. As much as we want to "win now" this is still a rebuild. Next year should be fun but I will surely enjoy this year and the team getting better.

Can't you try to "win now" and also try to give your QB experience but help limit his mistakes, and perhaps have him stand on the sidelines for a few plays?

How do you get better recruits? You start winning.
How do you win with lesser talent? You out coach them.
We ain't doing that.

Nope you get better recruits by outworking your competition in recruiting -getting them on the field early in their career and getting them more experience so they are better than their opponents in the same class and then your win totals generally stair-step up as they mature. Better recruiting by winning is a well duh rudimentary understanding of how you turn a untalented program around
If it was all about "coaching em up" you wouldn't see the routine practice of turning-over the roster which is the common way to get more scholarships available for recruiting younger recruits. If it was all about "coaching 'em up" with a rebuild you'd just take the same players and coach them better. This works at a school with an already talented roster but not when its a total rebuild like SMU
The idea is to have about 45-50 experienced players and about 16 returning starters (with 2-3 letters) on the team by about the 3rd of 4th year of the transition so you are more experienced and mature than most of your opponents.
Then you WIN Then you recruit even BETTER

Why not out coach and out recruit? Do they have to be mutually exclusive?

I need a copy of the book on "out coaching". Maybe we could send it to Morris and tell him he is doing it all wrong. He has forgotten more about coaching than Phil Bennett remembers.

OL was opening some big holes to start the game but once Hicks starting missing on deep throws, TCU was able to crowd the line and stuff the run. Our OL is banged up and not very deep but I still see improvement over recent years where every play was a jail break
Big holes-really? I didn't see any nor did our running backs.
I'd have to go back and watch that 1st drive but I thought we moved the ball with ease and our RB was clearing the line of scrimmage untouched. Agree it didn't last...especially after we had to reach further down the depth chart because of injuries

That was a Saban compliment. If coaching up was so easy everyone would be a Saban.
