No playmakers@ the most important position on the team.
Morris has had time 2 yrs to find qbs. The depth @ qb has been a joke for the last several years.
I like Morris, love the in state recruiting, but he gets an F for his qb recruiting.
The team is better, but you have to expect injuries, it's s big part of the game, & we have no depth.
Hopefully the Ark transfer is the answer, but Morris better have more options to go with him.

OL might fall into that category as well although I'm not sure any team in America could maintain the same level by losing 3/5 of their pre-season starting OL.

He came in too late in year one to really get a quality QB[see Hicks] so he only has had one year. Now he has 2 solid commitments for next year.

Ruminatin' late near the Northern Lights, but maybe look at luring someone akin to Dana Bible away from the 49ers. After all, the last two QBs he recruited and coached at NC St. both went on to the NFL, Glennon and Russell Wilson who already has a Super Bowl under his belt.

Add Erik Kramer (NFL from 1987-1999), Chad Hutchinson (Stanford - to the NFL), Tim Hasselbeck at Boston C. (OK, well, at least he played some in the NFL), Matt Ryan (also from BC, and 9 years with the Falcons; 3 Pro Bowls, 33,000+ yards passing, etc. etc.). Bio? QB talent spotter and trainer of NFL caliber QBs; you know, guys with hands big enough to hold the ball. Wilson and Ryan are likely in the HOF when the shouting and cheering have faded.

How many SMU QBs have played in the NFL since you were born? Meredith, Rhome, Livingston, McCown - 56 years. IMO, we need a QB that has at least a 50/50 shot of hitting the NFL more than 4 times in 56 years.

Anyway, back to the sticker patch, and throw in some damn big goathead seeds while we're at it!!! If there's no desire to suffer and win on Saturdays, then suffer on Mondays, or go home to Mama.

Gary Hammond threw an 81 yard pass for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1974. So technically that makes five NFL quarterbacks.

That was a team that was desperate to show it could play well below expectations.

I know injuries have destroyed much of this team but injuries don't destroy effort. There just wasn't the effort shown by the players in general. The receivers dropped too many balls. O line was a sieve. The D front 7 was blown off the ball too many times.

I was very disappointed and for the first time in a very long time mad at the Ponies.

The effort was almost non-existent. Watching the team on the sideline told me a lot.

I saw numerous plays where tackles/blocks could have been made with any effort and guys let a nudge or something of no significance take them out of the play. I'm worried that I saw a mental attitude that we've seen in the past and that's the worst part of it. I really thought we were past that with this regime.

The easy excuse 2 years ago was June Jones, and his lack of caring, and lack of community outreach, and lack of relationships with Texas coaches, and his crappy players, and his bad culture, and his lack of hitting in practice, etc. etc.

2+ full years later, with a roster that includes 83 out of 111 (75%) guys that he is personally responsible for bringing on board, 2+ years of preaching the Morris way,........and his best answer after laying an embarrassing egg is....'it's not my responsibility to motivate them.'

Bad answer. It's your team now coach. It IS your responsibility. At this point he's way more Texas salesman, than program savior.

The team played as if they had just listened to a motivational speech from fooballdad.

He has only had 2 classes and the first class he had to take some JJ recruits. So most of the team is still JJ recruits. But the QB he was was Chase Virgil who went to Fresno St. If they can get that position down next year along with adding more solid recruits SMU will improve.

Umm all the fame there isnt going to Venables or Scott and it wouldn't go to Chad. It is all Dabo Swinney, its always about the HC.

So he got the smu job why? Not because of clemson? National dominance with a heisman level qb helps your career quite a bit.

Hell gg kept jj in the hunt before he went down and jj wasn't even trying anymore

Chad's team. Their play is a reflection of HIM, and his leadership. He doesn't give motivational speeches, he says that's 'not his job.'

As for improvement over last year the defensive backfield is much stronger than last year. We have played three strong teams this year and have 11? or 12? interceptions. And the dbs are playing much tighter on passes then they did last year. Our DL and D LBs are much better (although they didn't play to their previous standard I do think they are an improvement over the past).

Offense - I think I saw an offensive lineman pull and run into the ball carrier. However, I was too disheartened after the game to go back and check it out. If true that is a bad indication of OL problems. Another bad sign which has happened in every game so far - STUPID mistakes like having a touchdown called back because of a holding penalty or a play for good yardage called back for a motion penalty. Intercepted passes and missed blocks are bad but generally they are not in the same category as the above. I understand CM's frustration. As for qb, Hicks has not had the type of problems in the past that he faces now. He is being challenged to release the ball before he's experienced and mentally ready. It is a much faster game even not counting the holes in the OL. Unfortunately Matt has been through the "initiation process" and "knows" what he must do on the field but he is gone. Thus, if I was CM I would think "lets do the best we can with what we have" and not burn red shirts. But, it goes without saying he's a lot smarter than me about his team. (So, you can expect him to burn them next game. LOL)

This is a much better team than last year...it's just a shame we have had the injuries we have had because we have so little depth.

Sure Rebel, a simple scan of the roster debunks your theory completely.

even with 75% of the roster being HCCM recruits it's too early to accurately evaluate Chad, those guys are still under classmen. I definitely think there are some mistakes Morris has made along the way so far but the rubber really hits the road next season. USF was in the same position last year with Taggert-- next year is when it is probably fair to make evaluations about how chad is doing

Chad tried to have a very orderly QB plan.... One QB recruited each year to back up Matt. He hoped that Matt stayed healthy so he wouldn't have to play a freshman QB. He could have recruited a high school QB ( Ben) and in the same class signed a Juco QB......but then he might not have gotten Ben. So he gambled to not sign a QB with some experience ( or at least maturity) in order to get Ben and hopefully David Moore.
His gamble failed- Ben doesn't have mid major D1 ability and David Moore bailed on him. HCCM knows QB's only go to a place where they think they can play and having a JUCO / transfer on the roster in line would have hurt recruiting.
Next year he'll have the Arkansas transfer, Matt, Ben, and Brewer. An embarrassment of (hopefully) riches.
Next year :
Matt
Ark transfer when Matt gets hurt
Brewer
Ben. Ben will transfer at year end next year.
