Dad: Tech releases Rockwall's Godwin

By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News

Rockwall 6-8 senior and Texas Tech signee Michael Godwin will not play basketball at Tech after all.

Godwin's father, Charlie, said Tech has released his son from the national letter of intent he signed in November.

Charlie Godwin said the Tech coaching staff notified Rockwall coach Lynn Nabi last week that they no longer wanted Godwin.

Godwin committed during his official visit to Lubbock in September.

Godwin, ranked the No. 35 player in the state by TexasHoops.com, was averaging 6.6 points and 5.1 rebounds entering the holiday tournaments. He had 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in Tuesday's victory over Mesquite Horn.

Attempts to contact the Tech media relations office were not immediately successful.

Godwin will reopen his recruitment and hopes to sign with a new team during the NCAA late signing period that begins April 12.

Are athletic scholarships at SMU guaranteed for 4-5 years when somebody signs with us, or are they the "1 year" type like at Tech?

Technically all NCAA LOI are 1 year contracts but remember this kid never signed a LOI. A commitment is simply an oral promise. However, schools run players off all the time.

With 29 football commitments, how many can not get into TX. Tech....or, will Tx. Tech simply not honor their commitment to the student athlete?

Talk about a sorry way to demonstrate "Commitment"....Tx. Tech and Coach Knight have just presented "Exhibit 1".

you're comparing apples and oranges which really doesn't make for a coherent argument. Tech can sign 29 under NCAA rules and I'm sure you are not aware of a single Tech football recruit whose scholarship won't be honored. Why don't you wait until you get a fact before you jump to a conclusion.

they are based year to year, there are ten ways a recruit can lose their scholarship, poor athletic performance (while playing for the university) is not one of them,

Stallion not trying to correct you but he did sign a letter of intent, friend of mine told me that Tech called his high school to tell the player they signed they wanted out of the letter, I also read today that the dad said they should have waited until the spring to sign.

exactly my point on Tech backing out on their "comittment" to the kid. Really tacky.

Anybody get a low quote for a business service ....only to have the winning bidder try to come up with some lame exuse about how they did not understand what they were bidding on?

Coach Knight has been evaluating talent for many years. Frankly, this is the first time I have ever witnessed this kind of "bait and switch".
