I'd recommend looking in Long Island City as well -- it's only a stop or two on the subway from Manhattan, yet hotel prices aren't outrageous by any means.Terry Webster wrote:Does anyone have a hotel in NJ that is close to a train that they would recommend? I live in Northern NJ and know the area. Madison Square Garden is on top of Pennsylvania Station where NJ transit train takes you into NYC. That said, I searched staying at a NJ Transit train station area thus taking the train from your hotel to Penn station, but I don't feel comfortable recommending any particular place. Some areas are best avoided like Newark city. Some areas are great but there are pockets of areas not so great, like Jersey City.
Perhaps the total cost adding in commuting, entertainment, meals may not be much cheaper than staying in Manhattan.
I have read about a low cost no thrills hotel called the POD.
check this out

POD 39 on 39th street is one mile from Penn Station.
POD 51 on 51st street is one short subway ride away.
from Penn station you can walk 1 mile to POD 39. For POD 51 take a subway on the E train (Subway) to Lexington Ave/53rd street. both are nice areas of NYC maybe POD 51 slightly nicer area.
from Newark Airport you take the airport free mono trail to NJ transit. take NJ transit to the last stop and you will be in Penn Station. if you are 62 or over you get a senior discount. They sell one way tickets so buy 2 one ways per person for the return while at Newark Airport. The train runs frequently and the easiest way to get from any airport to Manhattan.

Hilton brands are all over NYC. here is the closest to Madison Square Garden

but this isn't the nicest area.
are you bringing your spouse? is this a perk for her/him to allow you to go? if so I take POD 51 area.
PM me and we can discuss further. I know of great local restaurants and attractions, not typical tourist spots. How often do you get an excuse to come NYC? So come on up and enjoy yourself.
As they say: you don't want to be the richest man in the grave yard.

I ended up reserving at Arlo Nomad:

It's new, opening 11/1 and rated four star...I guess based on their other hotels.
Very solid rate and it's cancellable up until the day before!
FWIW.....

I figured I will only be in the room about 6 hours a night so I will use the money elsewhere

It's good in theory but then you have to get into the city AND across town. That's a combo of subway, taxi, walk etc. Much easier to stay on a NJ OR LIRR ( Queens/Long Island) train line that puts you right into Penn Station.FriscoPMG wrote:I'd recommend looking in Long Island City as well -- it's only a stop or two on the subway from Manhattan, yet hotel prices aren't outrageous by any means.Terry Webster wrote:Does anyone have a hotel in NJ that is close to a train that they would recommend? Just don't book counting on the Hoboken line. No telling when that comes back.

We booked at the Roosevelt for 169 a night. Pretty good location. Reviews show some left to be desired from rooms but don't plan on being there much
