When fans on this web site were making preseason predictions on wins and losses its seems that the majority (including myself) thought four wins would be about the best SMU could hope for. That was with an experienced run oriented quarterback. (I did change my mind after the UNT game because I thought both SMU and UNT might be better than I had thought. BTW UNT beat Army who beat Temple earlier in the year.) We lost our experience at QB in our first game of the year (vs UNT). We have been playing with a FRESHMAN qb ever sense who is not well suited for a run oriented offense. He gets better EVERY week. (I thought the game was lost yesterday and Hick's passing was a big factor in the win). May I point out that SMU is 4 and 4 and was 1 point away to being 5 and 3 with 4 games left. There is once again talk of SMU going to a bowl game on this board.

I think Hicks is doing a very good job - perhaps outstanding job under the circumstances. One of things I like about SMU football right now is a quarterback that can complete passes 30+ yards down field on a regular bases. And, we have receivers that can catch them.

Sunshine complains about the RS freshman QB and not the WR's that continue to drop many passes (including the great Sutton)? Well played...

He does seem to be dropping a couple very game. The long one downfield hit him in the hands, but we were bailed out by a PI call.

Hicks was under more pressure yesterday than the previous two games. TU had a great defensive game plan. He was clutch during the two clutch 4th quarter drives. It has been a long tie since we have had a young QB engineer two clutch 4th quarter long drives to win the game.

I believe Hicks is doing far better than is reasonable to expect from a Redshirt Fr QB.

And props to Deon Green who put a stop on Tulane's 4th and 2 around our 20. If they had scored on that drive, we wouldn't have had a chance to pull off the comeback. I do think the Football Gods have decided to give us a few breaks this year. Beat Memphis, remember the Alamo (last year's beatdown).

The QB always gets to much credit and too much blame. I think he has done a pretty good job so far. This is a team game, I can point out a few different positons that haven't done their job well every game. Give the guy a break, Geez. We are 4-4 with a QB that nobody thought would play this season.

If you were to take a poll of the worst UT staring quarterbacks (Post Tate), most Texas fans would probably have Gilbert in the Top 3. Maybe #1. Why? He was forced to start before he was ready. Simply put, he was horrendous. When he transferred to SMU, UT fans felt sorry for SMU. He was that bad. Nevertheless, the light switch eventually did turn on and he turned into a well above-average college QB.

Since Hicks is already starting to have a positive impact on the team (his toughness is borderline All-American), writing him off at this point is idiotic.

UT did not have a running game or good receivers during Garrett's sophomore year.

I bet they had a stable of top recruited talent
I'm not sure you're allowed to use the lack of talent excuse at UT-maybe the injury excuse

If our QB had been my son, I would have had him pulled during, not after, the Temple game. The kid was so badly beaten by their defense that I was worried we wouldn't even have a scholarship QB for the rest of the season. I wish some of you had to go through just a single quarter as an SMU quarterback, any year for the past 32 years, then criticize. Hell, let's fire the coach, cut the QB and go the National Championship. What are you guys smoking? Did your last girlfriend laugh at your bald headed mouse when you pulled it out?-- "look a bald headed mouse, only smaller!" One of the best things Stallion has said all year was that he was getting better, and having watched four practice series, fall and spring, I truly had my doubts. He is getting better, I am very impressed with his progress, even since fall practice.

This being 2016, an election year, and the internet (where nothing is ever forgotten), you will not be a candidate for President of the United States in your lifetime, Mexmustang...

and all mice hate you now...

Hicks has made steady progress. He and this team are growing, and getting better every week.
That is the next step in building this team, and program.

and let's not forget this team lost Xavier Jones to injury early in the season. With Xavier running # 1 and being backed up by West, just think of how much better our running game might be and remember how much a strong running game helps a QB. Just ask Dak.

1) Gilbert inherited most of the team that played in the National Championship game the prior year. Hicks inherited a team that won 2 games the prior year.
2) As a Texas fan, I can tell you that Gilbert never had to deal with the injuries on the OL that Hicks has. Frankly, I cannot think of any team that has been forced to play their 5th string TE at left tackle for most of a game (Temple).
